Maimoona the Gift

“Sorry,” I said. “Forgot to tell you where these were.”

I reached in to rub each girl’s back.

“You two seem to be very comfortable with this,” I said, then looked at Jessica. “She’s probably going to feel a little euphoric for a while. A little like she’s had too much to drink. You’ll need to keep an eye on her. Maybe take her up to your room and lie down. I’ll save some dinner for you.”

“Dinner?” Moona slurred. “Ohh, um, I was supposed to make dinner.”

“Shh,” I said. “It’s pizza night.”

Jessica smiled, and mouthed the words, ‘Thank you,’ before asking Moona if she felt okay to stand up.

  * * * *

Katrina and Sara had not asked why Moona and Jessica did not join us for dinner. I’m guessing they pictured them off somewhere, wrapped in each other’s arms. I held out hope that they were, still drifting and enjoying the closeness that comes from sharing such an intimate experience.

My two dinnertime companions had finished up, and to my pleasant surprise, even volunteered for kitchen clean-up duty. And though it consisted mostly of wrapping up the leftovers and tossing plates in the dishwasher, I was still struck by their kind offer.

I was sitting alone at the dining room table with two untouched place settings, thinking about how well things seemed to be progressing, when I heard the first creak of the stairs.

Moona was still in her bathrobe, but she had showered, and her dark, wet hair lay in contrast against the white terrycloth. Jessica had slipped into a pair of flannel lounge pants and a T-shirt, with her hair piled up loosely on top of her head. They both looked incredibly relaxed.

“Katrina and Sara are just putting away the leftovers,” I said. “If you’re quick, you can probably still get some.”

Before either Jessica or Moona could respond, Sara came bursting through the kitchen door, followed by Katrina. They each had a plate in hand with a slice of pizza next to a heap of salad greens.

“I hope you had a nice nap,” Sara said, and giggled just a little.

“Yeah, nap,” Katrina added, smirking, before they both disappeared back into the kitchen.

Oh, girls, if you only knew what kind of nap they just had.

But I couldn’t complain. It’s as if the stars had aligned for one perfect moment since I decided to open this little boarding house of mine. Sara had said more than two words without being prompted, and Katrina seemed downright civilized. Factor in the two dreamy-eyed wrecks that had just wandered in to join me, and I would say it was shaping up to be a very happy household.

“Good?” I said, and left it at that.

“Mm-hmm,” was the only response I got before Moona and Jessica discovered their voracious appetites and tore into the plates in front of them.

“Is it too early to say we’d like to do it again?” Jessica said.

  “That good?”

“Yes, Miss Baxter,” they both said.

Moona took a bite of pizza, chewed, and then spoke. “But maybe with a few modifications?”

  “Such as?”

“Well, you mentioned the spiders.” Moona was grinning. “And that made me think of being trapped in an alien spider web.”

“I could study up on my rope work,” Jessica chimed in.

“And one more thing, Miss Baxter?” Moona paused, and looked expectantly at Jessica.

“Will you do it?” Jessica asked. “The extraction, I mean. I’d, um…I’d really like to be able to just watch…for my study, of course.”

It was my turn to grin now. “Of course, dear.”

I turned to Moona. “And if I could ask a favor of you, dear. I’d like to write a letter to your mother. To let her know how we’re all getting on here. Would you see that she gets it?”

  “Yes, Miss Baxter.”

  “Thank you, dear.”
