Into the Hourglass

“What do we do now?” I whisper.
Jamison tips his head against mine. “For as long as possible, we sit still.”
I’m so exhausted that’s about all I can manage.
“This may turn out for the best,” he muses. “The constable corps will never guess that you or the others are here.”
Our security, even if temporary, means so much that I let the conversation lie and leave our worries for later. For now, I will take advantage of this moment. I will sit beside the fire with Jamison for as long as possible and let the future take care of itself.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Big thanks to these tremendous individuals:
The joys of my life—John, Joseph, Julian, Danielle, and Ryan. What an adventure! Many, many more are coming. Expect more road trips where I plot out loud while you’re stuck listening. And my mom and dad, Keith and Debby, my biggest cheerleaders.
My agent, Marlene Stringer, for reminding me that writing is supposed to be hard. Sometimes I need a verbal smack to the head. You also know when I need kind words of encouragement. Thanks for knowing which ones I need and when.
My editor, Jason Kirk. Dude, six books together? I hope (crosses fingers) we’re just getting started. I can’t say enough how much I appreciate you.
My developmental editor, Clarence Haynes. You steer my stories in the right direction. They are always stronger for it, and so am I.
Brittany Russell and Colleen Lindsay—you are magic! I don’t know how you get everything done. A million thanks for working so hard on my behalf.
My indomitable friends, Kate Coursey, Veeda Bybee, Kathryn Purdie, Jessie Farr, Annette Lyon, Natalie Barnum, and Kim Swallow, you ladies are my go-to accomplices. Let’s make more mischief together, shall we?
And last but not least, a shout-out to the amazing authors who were there for me during a trying few months: Shannon Hale, Robison Wells, Jessica Day George, Ally Condie, Wendy Jessen, and Sarah M. Eden. You know what you did, and you know why I appreciate you.
