All I Want for Christmas Eve

  “Please, I promise it’s a good one.”

  “Fine, I’ll allow.”

“One day Adam was asking God questions, and he said to him, ‘Lord, why did you make Eve so beautiful?’ God said, ‘So you would love her.’ Adam asked then, ‘Lord, why did you make her feel so soft and nice?’ God said again, ‘So you would love her.’ Adam asked finally, "But Lord, why did you make her so dumb?” And God said, ‘So she would love you.’”

I roll my eyes and try to supress a chuckle. “Are you calling me dumb?”

“No, because that was a very different Adam. I’m the new and improved version, remember?”

“I certainly hope so,” I say, stepping forward and wrapping my arms around his neck.

“I just drove across an entire country to prove it to you. And there were a lot of moose and deer on the roads, in Canada—it’s a wonder I made it here in one piece.”

“Reindeer like Sven?” I ask, glancing at my sister’s boyfriend, who is still spying on us.

  “What?” Adam asks.

“Don’t worry about it. I think we’re going to have a healthier relationship than the first Adam and Eve did. I mean, women can vote now.”

“Did I tell you about my first wife, Lillith?” he asks.

  “Really?” I ask.

“Just kidding. Bible jokes. I promise I’ll stop.”

“It’s okay,” I tell him, placing my hands on the front of his coat. “I like your jokes.”

“I always thought you did,” he says with a smile.

“Can I tell you a secret?” I whisper to Adam. “When I saw your plane on fire, I thought it was a shooting star. I wished for someone just like you. But when I found you… I thought that there was no way this could be real. No way I could get this lucky. So I kept self-sabotaging and telling myself that there had to be a catch. That I didn’t deserve to be this happy, or have Santa send me exactly what I’ve always wanted. My heart’s desire. I didn’t know it could come true, so I just ran away at the first sign of trouble. I’m so sorry.”

He places his hands on my cheeks, smiling. “Can I tell you a secret?” He asks in response. “I’ve been wishing for you on every birthday cake, every 11:11, and every shooting star for my whole damn life. When I saw you, I just knew. But every day I spent around you, I knew even more. You think you’ve gotten lucky, but I’m the one who really lucked out. All I want for Christmas, Eve, is you.”

I stand there, in the middle of the street, staring at him for a while. And smiling way too much, because my cheeks hurt. “And maybe some cake pops?” I say, gesturing toward the bakery.

Adam rubs his stomach, which happens to growl at that very moment. “You know I would never say no to cake pops.” He offers me his arm, and walk into the bakery together, and when I look at all the beautiful desserts that surround us, they look delicious again. I squeeze his arm and lean my head on his shoulder.

I think it feels like Christmas again.
