The Spia Family Branches Out

“That’s probably a wise decision, given your choices,” he said with a lilt to his voice. “I’d expect nothing less from one of my daughters.”
“But I thought you wanted me to marry Giuseppe?” I asked, staring into his eyes. He wore horn-rimmed glasses that shaded in the sun. His salt and pepper mustache almost had me fooled, but I’d recognize the curve of his jaw, and that round hairline anywhere.
He shrugged. “That was more Mariateresa’s idea than mine.” He patted my hand with his as we walked. My knees almost buckled at his touch, and he had to steady me as we walked.
“But what about the ancient olive trees in Italy and all the bloodshed?”
“We have another solution . . . I’d like to invite you to my wedding, Mariateresa’s and mine.”
“What?” I said, a little too loudly just as we began to file into the church. I could hear everyone stand to welcome the bride. Fortunately, we were still too far away for anyone to really see us.
“Will you come?” he asked just as Aunt Babe turned and glanced my way. She winked and I wondered just how long she’d known about this meet up.
“I . . . um . . .”
Then Jade glanced back at us, doing a double glance, which caused Nick to turn around and give us the once over just as Lisa stumbled, forcing him to make sure she was all right.
“It will be next month sometime,” my dad said.
We entered the church, just as Nick glanced back at us one more time. My dad smiled over at him, but Nick didn’t smile back. Instead, he turned back towards the front of the church as he said something to Lisa.
“You have to get out of here,” I told my dad under my breath. “Nick has spotted you.”
“Not before you tell me that you’ll come, and that you’ll bring your sister, and that best friend of yours. I’m a big fan. I’ve read all her books.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I said. “Even you?”
He chuckled. “Promise me,” he repeated, as Nick glanced back one more time, his face taking on a deadly demeanor just before Lisa said something to him once again, taking his attention away from my dad and me.
“I . . . um . . . I promise!” I told him, just as Giuseppe slipped in and took my arm replacing my father. Giuseppe had replaced Leo, much to my mixed feelings about it, but, of course I had no control over this situation or anything else about this day, truth be told. I could do nothing except show up, smile, and see what happened. Story of my life.
“I love you, baby girl,” I heard my dad say just as Lisa finally let go of the death grip that she’d had on Nick’s arm.
“I love you, too,” I heard myself say, but I had no idea if my dad had heard me.
Nick tried his best to go after my elusive dad, but unfortunately for Nick, my mother and the rest of the Spia clan got in his way. Let’s just say my mother’s wedding went on without a hitch, and Nick is still trying to get his man . . . my dad . . . Enzo Spia.
