He was Fae.
“What news do you bring, sweet Evaine?” he said with a dull, unamused tone. The low tenor rumbled in my gut.
I glanced to the middle of the room. And there she was. Evaine. The pure embodiment of death. She bowed to the Fae.
“Milord.” Inky, black ribbons swirled up and around her. “I’ve found her.”
His storm grey eyes flashed and widened as he shot up straight. “Are you certain?”
Evaine shrugged and began to pace the creaky castle floors with her rotten bare feet. “I’ve been following her for weeks. Ever since the bargain came to life.” Black talons gripped her upper arms as she crossed them over her chest. “But I could always gut her and see.”
He flew to Evaine in a flash. Gripped her neck before his chair hit the floor. Forcing her to her knees. Evaine. On her knees. Who was this man, this… fairy? To have such power. All I could do was stare. I was a lifeless form, intruding on a dream. Or was it real? Was this some sort of vision?
“Please, Milord!” she cowered. “I promise to bring her to you unscathed.”
He loomed over her for a moment, stared down in thought. “No.”
“No?”
“Not yet,” he confirmed and released Evaine. She scrambled to her feet and glared daggers into his back as he sauntered back to his chair. “Follow her some more. Learn all that you can and report back to me.”
“What do you want to know?” Evaine’s black eyes dripped tar down over her pallor cheeks.
He grinned and folded an ankle over one knee as he leaned back. “Everything. I want to know what makes her tick.” A tumbler of golden liquor appeared in his hand, and he sipped from it. “I want to know how to undo her, inside and out. It’s time.” The Fae took another sip and stared off in the distance with a cunning promise in his eye. “To claim what is mine.”
