“He’s got a great arm, your boy over there,” said Will as we both watched William, Erin, along with Zoey, his other beautiful princess, run around in our huge backyard.

“He sure does, and he loves it too. He’s so cute as he runs down the field trying to get a touchdown. I get so happy at the sight of it. My heart feels as if it’s going to burst wide open.”

“I know the feeling quite well. It’s amazing, isn’t it?”

“It is, and not a day that goes by that I don’t cherish every moment with him. You were right, and I don’t know if I ever really thanked you for what you did for me. When you first married Meg, I watched how happy you were and how she made you better just by loving you. At the time, I couldn’t allow my mind to go to places that were not attainable to me. My mother was an angel but my father was a dick, and I thought I may have inherited his genes and would have been a shitty husband just like him.”

“You weren’t ready. Some of us get there quicker than others, but that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve the same happiness.”

“Thanks, man. I guess sometimes I need to hear the words to make it real, you know?”

  “I know,” he replied.

We were interrupted by Taylor calling us in for lunch. Will scooped up his daughters and twirled them around until they were all dizzy and giggling. I just watched in awe that this was my life, and it was a great one.

“Come on, Daddy,” my son called out, and I snapped out of my fog and scooped my little boy up and into my arms. William equally squealed in giggles.

We made our way inside, and I placed our son down and walked over to kiss my wife. “Hey,” I whispered as I kissed her neck.

She blushed and kissed me back. “You okay?” she asked.

“I’m great. It’s a perfect day.” And one of many spent with my family.

A voice called out from the living room, and Taylor rushed over to greet Becca as she pulled her into a hug and they both entered the dining room.

“Am I late? Sorry, the life of a grad student,” she said as I got up and gave her a sweeping hug. She gave her little brother a hug and then took her seat beside him.

“No, you are right on time,” I said and placed a kiss to her forehead.

As we all gathered around our family dinner table, I took a moment to take in all the smiling faces and absorbed the sounds of the sweet laughter that filled our home on a daily basis.

I couldn’t stop smiling because I have an amazing life, and I probably wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for our daughter, Becca, intervening on both our behalf by sending that letter to me.

After Taylor and I reunited and married shortly after, I wanted to do something special for Becca and could only think of the one thing she’s always wanted: a father. A real father who will always love and protect her. I was all in not only with Taylor but Becca too. We were a family forever, and although she was of age, I still took the necessary measures to adopt her officially. On the day she changed her name and accepted mine as her own, my heart felt so much love that I didn’t believe life could be any more perfect.

A long time ago, all I had was football, the one dream I worked so hard to achieve, the one thing I believed I could not live without until the day I witnessed an angel standing at a bus stop, getting soaked in the rain. Today, I am blessed with an amazing family who I love and who love me back with all their hearts. Yeah, I may no longer have football, but my life is complete because it begins and ends with my amazing wife, son, and daughter…the three who I went all-in for and who now live and breathe in every part of my heart.
