The Unwanted Spy

I roll my eyes. “I know how I look, Kal. I’m not talking about looks. I’m talking about everything. You’re the whole package, and I am just... well, what you see is what you get.”

“You’re saying that because of your parents. Your mom messed with your head,” he says, not giving me a chance to object. “Do you know why I voted for you?”

I shake my head. “No. Why?”

He grins. “Well, I read your file. It talked about your roommate. Apparently, the girl was somebody that nobody could get along with. They were going to put her in a room by herself, but you requested to room with her your sophomore year, despite the fact that you knew she hated you. Within three months, you not only befriended the girl, but somehow you got others to like her, too. You were able to see past what everybody else saw, and you were able to change this girl’s life. And I thought anybody who could do that would be perfect on our team.”

I frown. “She was nice. Nobody gave her a chance, but that is a really bad example for why you voted for me, considering I’m the reason we’re in this stupid hospital right now.”

“No,” he says. “All of us are here because we all messed up, not just you. If only I had confessed how I feel for you a long time ago, we wouldn’t be in this situation right now.”

“How you feel about me?” I question.

His mouth turns up in the corners. “I’m attracted to you, too.”

  “You are?” I ask.

His smile just widens. I think he’s going to say something else, but instead he leans forward, capturing my lips with his.

Kal’s lips are so soft and warm—like he is. And I know he’s holding back because we’re in the middle of a waiting room at a hospital, but his kiss makes me melt. If there was any doubt before about my feelings for him, there are none now.

  I’m so screwed.

How am I supposed to choose between these four guys?

Somebody clears their throat from behind me. Kal and I jerk apart and I look over to see Alek standing there.

“Sorry to disrupt.” Alek smirks as he says it, like he’s not at all sorry he disrupted. “But Michael Sinclair is on his way.”

  Monday, November 6

  Fantastically well.

After one night in the hospital, Ian was released. He’s going to be healing for the next six weeks, but apparently the break was clean so it will fully heal. But until then, Ian is going to need a lot of help doing everything.

When Michael Sinclair came to visit, we caught him up on everything that happened. I’m surprised he even showed up, but I guess he was near the area anyway. When we told him about the drug problems that the area seemed to be having, he sent out a team to take care of it right away. I guess he likes to use the area for a lot of training sessions and having drug labs and crazy guys with guns there wouldn’t be good. He congratulated us on surviving.

After that, he invited us to stay in his Northern California home for a few nights—he had somewhere else to be, but he said we deserved a few days off. When the director of Spy School tells you that you can use his multi-million-dollar home for the weekend, you don’t turn him down. So, we stayed there until this morning when we flew back home.

As small and sad as our condo is, I am glad to be back on The Island. I missed this place.

Everything is surprisingly good. The guys have been nice to me. Kal hasn’t kissed me again, but Alek also hasn’t brought up the fact that he witnessed the kiss.

Alek smirks entirely too much when we head up to the gym for training, and I guess this is the point where he is going to bring up the kiss. He’s going to make a sarcastic joke about it or something…

I put my hands on my hips, looking at him. “Out with it.”

“Out with what?” He gives me an innocent smile.

“You saw Kal and me kissing.”

His grin widens. “Yeah, I did.”

I wait for him to say something else, but he doesn’t.

  I’m actually surprised.

Until he does open his mouth. “I’m just wondering when it’ll be my turn to kiss you.”

“Your turn?” I raise an eyebrow.

“You kissed West and Kal. I think it’s my turn now,” he says. “Honestly, I’m a little offended that you made me wait so long.”

  He wants to kiss me?

“I thought you hated me,” I say.

He shakes his head, stepping forward. “I think you and I both know that’s a lie, Roxy Villareal. I wanted to hate you. Every time we came into this room to train, it would take everything in me to focus on training. All I’ve wanted to do is kiss you. Maybe I was a little cranky, but only because I was mad at you for being so pretty.”

  My eyes widen. “Alek!”

He just takes another step forward. “But now things are different.”

“Are they?” Maybe he’s right. Maybe things are different. Things definitely feel different now.

“You know, I heard the conversation you had with Kal.” He is standing so close that I can feel the warmth from his body.

  “Which conversation?”

“The one where you said you’re attracted to me.”

I put my hand over my racing heart. “Oh.”

He rubs his hand along my cheek. “West was right when he said it’s cute when you blush. It is very, very cute.”

The way he calls me cute only makes my heart race even faster.

Alek leans down, capturing my lips with his. He walks me backward until my back hits the window. I run my fingers through his hair until he captures my hands with his, holding them above my head. Something about the movement makes my body come alive. I want more of this, more of him, but with the way Alek has me pinned against the wall, I can’t even touch him.

I whimper and he chuckles, gently running a finger down my throat. “You’re very impatient, Roxy. I will teach you patience.”

With his words, he backs away from me, leaving me panting.

“You stupid Russian, you’re way more impatient than I am.” I try to sound tough, but my voice comes out all breathy and weak. I sound pathetic.

He smirks. “Oh, Roxy, we are going to have so much fun.”

I groan, pushing myself off the wall.

A little later, Alek and I head back to the condo. We kind of goofed off during our training session. I think we’re both still in vacation mode, so we head back early. When we get into the condo, West is on a conference call with Michael Sinclair, but the call comes to an end before I can even catch what the conversation was about.

“We’re not about to get dropped in another forest, right?” Alek asks.

We walk over to where West is sitting on the couch by Ian. Kal walks out of his room, joining us in the living room.

“No more forests,” West promises. “But we do have a case.”

I grin, loving the idea of having another case to work on with the guys.

“There was an assassination attempt on the Russian president. It’s all staying very hush hush. Nobody in the media knows. But Michael Sinclair thinks that the attempt is somehow connected to what happened in Saudi Arabia. Basically, he wants us to see if we can connect the dots,” West explains.

“Sounds fun,” Kal says, mimicking my own thoughts.

I think we’re all ready for something to work on. We’re Spy School—we can never sit still for long.

“He also asked how we’re getting along now,” West says.

Everybody grows quiet at his words.

I clear my throat. “Uh, what did you say?”

West smiles. “I told him we’re getting along fantastically well.”

Fantastically well is a good answer, especially because I believe the words are true.

Finally, we’re a team—a family. And we’re mostly getting along. So, I’m very happy.

I think it’s the first time in my life I’ve ever been genuinely happy.

So why do I feel like I’m one stupid decision away from losing it all?

p; Why are you moving my bed?

That night, as I’m about to go to bed, I hear movement from inside my room. West is sitting on the couch next to me, so I wonder who is in there. I get up to investigate and when I walk through the door, I’m surprised to see Alek. I don’t think he’s ever been in my room.

“Why are you moving my bed?” I cross my arms over my chest as I watch him.

He doesn’t answer my question. Instead, he lifts my bed frame up on its side. My pillow falls onto the floor, but he holds a hand on to keep the comforter from falling off, too. He scoots my bed out of the door and I chase after him, wondering if he’s about to put my bed on the balcony as a prank or something.

I expected pranks when I first moved into the condo. Part of me thought that the guys would mess with me, but they didn’t like me at the time, so they left me alone. Well, other than the one prank when West put hair dye in my shampoo. Maybe they’re making up for lost time.

When Kal sees Alek moving my bed, he gets up and helps. West also gets up, but he goes into our room and I’m left just looking at Ian. Ian just shrugs his shoulders at me.

  Boys are so weird.

Kal and Alek move my bed into their room and I follow them out of curiosity. I hope when they’re done with whatever they’re doing they will put my bed back in my room. It looks heavy.

They end up putting my bed right between theirs. Before I can question it, West comes in, scooting his bed in, too. Alek helps him position it on the other side of his bed and a few seconds later, Ian hobbles in the room.

“Somebody has to move my bed, too,” Ian says.

I sigh, looking between them. “What is going on? Why is everybody moving their beds?”

“What does it look like, Princess?” West asks, a smirk on his face.

“We want you in our room,” Kal answers before I can. “Duh.”

It makes absolutely no sense why the guys would want me in their room with them, but the fact that they do makes my chest swell.

When I first came here, they hated me so much that they drew straws to see who would be ‘stuck’ with me. And West slept on the couch for over two months to avoid being in the room with me. Now, the guys are moving my bed into their room because they want to be closer to me.

Tears press against the backs of my eyes as I realize that I really do belong here. I’m really a Royal. The guys want me.

“Ah, we made her cry.” Alek frowns. “Should I put your bed back?”

I shake my head. “Don’t. I’m not crying because I’m unhappy. It’s a happy cry.”

  “Girls are weird,” Kal says.

I roll my eyes at him. “I just feel like I finally belong.”

Ian puts his arm around me. “You do belong, Roxy. You always have. I’m sorry that it took us so long to realize that.”

I suck in a sharp breath, looking between the four guys—my four Royals.

They want me here just as much as I want to be here.

“Does this mean we’re having a slumber party tonight?” I ask.

Alek walks over to his bed and lies down. He props his head up to look at me. “It depends. What does a slumber party entail?”

“I don’t know. Do I look like the kind of girl who got invited to slumber parties?” I put my hands on my hips.

“Lame.” Kal sits down on his bed, then pats my bed that is directly between his and Alek’s.

I’m going to be so close to all of them now.

I climb onto my bed, even though I’m not tired yet. Somehow, I think it’ll take me a while to get sleepy. I’m too excited.

The guys have fully accepted me, and I don’t think my heart is ever going to stop racing—not around these boys.

  The end.

Book 2, The Cruel World, is coming soon!

  Back of Book

  Letter from Scarlett.

This book has been one that I have been SO EXCITED to write for a very long time. The fact that I just typed ‘the end’ feels so surreal.

These characters feel like a complete game changer to me. And it really is. This book changes everything about Spy School. It adds a new element that we’ve never seen before—The Royals. And I’m so excited to continue exploring this side of the world.

I have plenty more books planned for Roxy and the guys and I’m so excited to see where their story takes us. I hope you’re excited, too!

If you did enjoy this book, it would mean a lot to me if you left a review wherever you picked this up.
