Good Husbandry

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Thanks to my agent, Flip Brophy, for being my advocate and friend, and to Nell Pierce for all her help. Heartfelt thanks to my editor, Kara Watson. Her combination of skill and kindness made this a better book by far, and the process of writing it so much more enjoyable. I’m grateful to Beth Thomas for excellent copyediting, to Emily Greenwald for her stellar assistance, and to Nan Graham for giving me a wonderful home at Scribner. Thanks to Judy Goldschmidt and Nina Nowak for being first readers back when this was a big messy pile of pages, and for friendship and support when I needed it most.
One of the hardest parts of getting a book out the door is finding a quiet place to do it. The Blue Mountain Center provided a much-needed haven. The Essex Volunteer Fire Department and Lakeside School offered a desk at any hour. Barbara Kunzi loaned me her whole house for the long final stretch. I am so grateful to her for that generosity.
It took a lot of help to keep the family and farm afloat while I was working elsewhere. Thanks to everyone who has farmed here with us and especially those who lent me their stories. I deeply appreciate your willingness to do it. Barbara, Beth, Don, and Ronnie, thanks for nurturing our girls.
Thanks to my parents, Tony and Linda, for being my biggest fans always, and to my sister, Kelly, for so darn many things, but most especially for showing me what love and courage look like when deployed in equal measure. Finally, thanks and all my love to Mark, Jane, and Miranda. Life with the three of you is the greatest adventure.
