Joel laughed at the lightning fast speed of Rachel’s words, but he answered every one of her questions. “Twelve weeks. Due in July. Having the baby here. And, of course, you can be godmother. No one else would be nearly as good.”
Rachel breathed a sigh of relief at that, leaning across the table and covering Joel’s hand with her own.
“Oh, Joel. I’m so happy for you. It’s all working out, isn’t it?”
Joel smiled because it was. Two years ago, he’d been a lonely professor with no love life and barely any social life outside weekly drinks with Rachel and Grey and the occasional Skype call with the clan.
Now, he had just finished a six-month stint as the Professor in Residence at one of England’s top geology departments, had a beautiful wife he loved more and more every day, and now, he had a baby on the way.
“I have to pinch myself sometimes to remember that it’s not all a dream,” he admitted to Rachel, leaning forward and taking a sip of his latte.
“It isn’t,” Rachel said, squeezing his hand again before sitting back in her chair. “It’s all real. Keira, the baby, it’s all real. And you deserve every bit of it.”
Joel’s phone beeped where he’d set it next to his coffee cup, and he motioned for Rachel to hold on a minute. “It’s Keira,” he said, opening the text message. Her name in his phone was eight letters, three simple words, but they meant far more than the sum of their parts: I want you.
But then Joel read the text message, and those three words were nearly eclipsed by the four Keira had written. “Doc says it’s twins!”
Joel smiled as he thumbed a reply. He couldn’t contain his smile as he imagined just what their two werebear babies would look like.
“It’s twins,” he said, looking up at Rachel in disbelief.
“Well, I’ll be. Joel McManus, you’ve won the jackpot,” she said.
And Joel could do nothing but nod and agree.
