Unstable: Witches

But she didn’t confront me about it. She didn’t come clean. She didn’t offer to tell me all about my mother and my father or attempt to disclose any family secrets that might lead me one step closer to finding the man who’d cursed me with my dragon side.

All my Aunt Inez did, ever since I went back to Under Realm Academy after the holidays, was send me daily letters. I’d opened the first one on the first day back, thinking that she would apologize and offer to meet me on campus and explain the whole thing to me, but it turned out to be nothing more than a quick note asking me if I was settling in alright for the second semester.

She was determined to pretend that I was nothing more than a full-blooded witch with a particularly strong fire affinity.

  Maybe she was in denial.

Either way, with every letter that arrived, I decided to stop opening them.

I snatched the letter from my pillow and glared at it. It was written on thick, expensive paper, and an elegant M had been scrawled on the outside to indicate that it was for me.

With a glare, I summoned the fire within me that always brewed under the surface of my skin and begged to be set free, setting the letter aflame. It turned into a pile of ash in the palm of my hands, which I tossed into the trashcan without a second thought.

Dear Aunt Inez, I would’ve written back if I wasn’t so stubborn. How the hell do you think my semester is going so far?

  I hope you enjoyed Unstable!
