“I … I don’t know. I could try.”
“You sure?”
“Give me your hand.”
Mallory reached out, tentatively, and put her hand in his.
Her hand was smooth, cold.
He closed his eyes, waiting for something.
And then he got two flashes.
One of them bright enough to make him smile.
But the other was dark, and Jasper couldn’t mask his face before it betrayed him.
“What is it?” She pulled her hand away. “What did you see?”
“You’re going to have another child.”
“What?”
“A daughter.”
“What? I’m not even married. With who? When?”
“I don’t know.” Jasper shook his head. “It’s not that specific. She’s older … maybe you adopted?”
“Why did you look so scared?”
“Because there’s somebody out there even worse than Dodd. And he’s going to come for you.”

A Note From The Authors
Welcome back to Creek County.
Funny story — well, funny if you’ve got a morbid writer’s sense of humor like me — after Nolon and I finished the fourth No Justice book, he was pretty much wiped out by how dark that last story went.
You see, Nolon and I outline the books and then I write the first draft.
But when it comes to the writing process, I tend to only use the outline as a starting map. Once I’m into the story, I stop following the map and follow where the characters want to take me, and what they want to show me.
And they wanted to show me some horrible shit.
So Nolon was a bit surprised by just how dark the fourth book got.
I think he needed to go pet a bunch of puppies for months on end to cleanse himself.
So when we got to the fifth book, we did what we usually do — outlined the story and then I got to work on the first draft.
A couple weeks in he asked, “So, Dave, I haven’t heard from you in a bit. Um, is this book going to be dark?”
“No, not at all,” I lied. “It’s much lighter.”
And then I sent him this draft.
And I think I broke him.
Now the thing is, I hadn’t intended for it to get this dark.
But that’s what the characters decided to show me.
And if Mal and Jasper have something to show me, I’d be a fool to ignore them.
At any rate, I enjoyed the ride even if it was another dark one.
But it’s nothing compared to what’s coming next. One more dark ride with Mal and Jasper in the sixth, and probably final, book in the series.
