Dark Curse

An elf stone? My eyes widened. “And you’re giving it to me?” My jaw dropped in shock. Yes, I probably looked like an idiot, but I’d never received something so extravagant and lovely in my entire life. What do you say to that?

Gareth’s face curled into a smile. “The stone is supposed to bring you luck and protect you.”

“Mmm-hmmm.” Damn it. My mouth wasn’t working. I knew I was going to need all the luck and protection with what I had in mind with the angels. I just never expected this.

“Do you like it?” Gareth’s worried tone pulled my eyes to him.

“Like it?” I dropped my eyes back to the elf stone, rubbing my finger gently against the cool stone. “I love it. I really do. It’s beautiful.” I gave the elf a sideways smile. “Is this because of the gun that was pointed at my head? You think I need protection?”

Gareth took a breath and released it. “Well, you do have knack for trouble, Rowyn.”

It was the nicest thing anyone had ever done for me. It was the strangest thing to try not to smile when your lips were cemented into a grin. I was trying to act cool, but I was failing miserably. Thank God Layla and Danto were too busy with themselves to notice.

With the box settled in my lap, I grasped the chain between my fingers, enjoying the feel of the silver against my fingertips. My eyes met his. “Can you put it on for me?” I asked, turning sideways and holding out the chain.

Gareth took it from me and I lifted my hair. My skin prickled at his touch, his rough fingers along my neck. I enjoyed the feel of his hands on my skin, tingles arcing through me.

When he let go, the elf stone hit just above my breasts, its cool exterior sending goose bumps over my skin. But then, incredibly, the stone hummed and began to warm. I could feel... it was almost as though I could feel...

I spun around in my seat, grinning at the elf. “It has magic. Doesn’t it? I can feel it tingling against my skin!”

Gareth pulled his lips into a smile. He was beautiful with the sunlight shining down over him and gleaming against his hair and eyes, and that lovely skin of his.

“Maybe,” he said. His lips curled as he eyed me, looking both mischievous and refined.

My heart bounced with excitement. “Pullomancy?”

“The stone has elf dust inside,” said Gareth, his face pleased. “I thought you might like that.”

I clasped the stone with my hands and brought it closer. It wasn’t light inside the stone, but tiny dust particles. Brilliant dust particles. Elf dust. I had my very own elf magic wrapped around my neck.

Gareth had given me a rare pendant...

A sudden mix of emotions flared up, scaring the crap out of me. What the hell did this mean?

Gareth turned and raised his glass to me. He hesitated a bare instant, and then he said, “To you, Rowyn. To a new beginning.”

I smiled and bumped the tip of his wine glass with mine. “To us.”

We were safe for now, on this glorious sunny day.

And I was going to enjoy it.
