Her Protector
Page 4
I caught Emily staring at the sparkly new diamond ring on her left hand. Probably another one of the reasons she smiled so much lately. I’d popped the question. She’d said yes.
The doorbell rang and Jack walked over to answer the front door. His sister Madison stood on the stoop, tears streaming down her face, and stepped into Jack’s embrace.
“Hey, hey, what’s wrong Maddie?” Jack asked.
Madison mumbled something unintelligible against his chest. She stepped back and handed Jack an envelope. Maverick pushed away from the counter and made his way into the living room. Emily snagged Katie from my lap and I joined them.
Madison was beside herself, but when she looked up and locked eyes with Maverick, the sparks between them nearly ignited the fucking carpet.
Jack opened the letter and read it aloud.
“It’s been almost twenty years, princess. One more week and I’ll be out for good behavior. You’re all grown up now, and I can’t wait to see what a beautiful woman you’ve turned into. I know you haven’t stopped thinking about me since that day I picked you up from third grade and took you home with me. You do remember me, don’t you princess?”
