The Sisterhood

“Well, don’t cry about it, silly,” Charity said, her voice more gentle than her words. She kissed Nan’s forehead. “You are right. The world isn’t perfect. I doubt that it ever will be. We can love each other, and the Sisterhood can rejoice in our love, but to the wider world our love must always be a secret. The sale of humans is now against the law, but until all men are free, our battle cannot be said to be won. But Nan—oh, Nan—for today, can it not be enough? Just for today?”

“For today indeed.” And the smile was back on Nan’s face, the joy in her voice. “And tomorrow too. And who knows, maybe for the next sennight together! Oh, Harry, I never knew I could be this happy. All my wishes, all my dreams.”

“For today,” Charity said, and kissed her again.
