“I can handle it.” She would never let anything pull them apart ever again. “I want a life with you.”
“You’re all I’ll ever need.”
She believed that with all of her heart. He’d been spending so much time with her these past few days he hadn’t confronted Kenny yet. She worried about how that would go.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
He knew her too well. She didn’t want to ruin the moment but she needed him to know how she felt. “I was thinking about Kenny.”
“Seriously?”
“He’s been your best friend your whole life. He acted like an idiot. You’re grown men. I shouldn’t have been able to come between you.”
“You didn’t.” He tucked her hair behind her ear. “Whatever his problem is will stay his problem. I haven’t contacted him because my focus has been on us and this relationship. No one will come between us ever again. When I do deal with him, I’ll make it very clear where my priorities are.”
“I want you to know if you can work things out with him I would support that decision.”
“That’s very generous of you. I do believe he had my best interest at heart, but he was wrong. It’s going to take me some time to come to terms with things. Now isn’t the time.”
“I’m sorry, but I know it’s on your mind and I wanted you to know that I would never make you choose.” Maggie could be impulsive and overprotective, so if Kenny was acting in Pax’s best interest she understood. Soph didn’t think she could ever be friends with Kenny, but she wouldn’t stop Pax.
“There’s no contest. If I had to make a decision I hope you know who I would choose.”
“I do.” She hugged him. “I hope you can work things out and get him to see how happy we are together.”
“After the holidays I’ll see where we stand. If he can’t accept you he can’t be in my life.” He stared up at the tree. “I don’t want to talk about that anymore. I just proposed.”
“This is magnificent.” She looked down at her hand and admired the large diamond ring. Maggie was better at this sort of thing but if Soph had to guess she’d bet it was at least three carats. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“I picked it out in September. I was going to propose as soon as the season ended but...”
“That’s in the past, remember?”
“From now one we only look to the future. And as long as my future includes you and our child I’ll always have what I need.”
“You’re stuck with us.” She kissed him, feeling content and loved. “I’m yours. I have been from the very beginning.”
“I think it’s the other way around.” He stroked her cheek. “You captivated me from the very first night. I didn’t know what hit me, but I knew it was something spectacular. Something worth pursuing.”
“I’m glad you bumped into me that morning at the lake.” She intertwined their fingers. “You changed my life.”
“Now we get to spend the rest of our lives together.” He cradled her against his chest. “I love you, Sophie. You’ve stolen my heart.”
“I love you too.” She placed a kiss on his jaw. “Every day, forever.”
