Secret of the Malpais

Page 14

by Ferber, Richard

"Well," Logan said. He helped Angela up into the saddle and for a moment stood with his hand on her knee, but not looking at her. He was looking down the canyon, and at the buttes and ridges beyond. They all looked like something other than what they were... needles, women's breasts ... and they all had meaning: they all showed the way to gold.

Gold. It had been lost once, then found, and now lost again... more surely than before. But still just lying in little sacks around the Malpais, just waiting for someone to come and pick it up. Not him. He had enough. He had something that glittered less, and lasted longer. All a man's life, maybe. Maybeso...

He left his hand where it was for another moment, then let go and swung up into the saddle.
