  Me: What happened?

Chloe: I got bombarded getting out of class. I can’t believe they let them on campus.

Me: I’m going to get you.

Chloe: No. We're going to have to work through this. Better stay where you are and not give them a real story.

Me: God you’re so smart. I love you.

  Chloe: I love you more.

  Me: More is a lot.

  Chloe: Yes, it is.

Me: I’m going to head home. But we’ve got some things to talk about tonight. Good things.

  Chloe: Any hints?

Me: My career might not be over.

Chloe: Holy cow! Are you kidding me? That’s fantastic news!

Me: I’m not going to jinx it or anything so we’ll talk about it tonight.

  Me: I love you.

Chloe: Ok. I love you too.

When we got down to the lobby, I stepped off the elevator first, and Grant walked close behind me. “Was there a problem?” Grant asked.

“Chloe got caught off guard after class by some reporters,” I growled it out.

“You’re not planning on going to get her, are you?” Grant put his hand on my arm getting me to stop and talk to him.

“No. She said she’s fine.” I said, avoiding eye contact I looked out of the floor to ceiling windows to find a herd of reporters with cameras. “Fuck.” I hissed. I turned back around so they wouldn’t get any photos of my face.

“You’re going to stay calm and make it through them. They’re going to ask questions, and I want you to ignore everything they ask you. No matter what it is. Do you understand me?” Grant snapped at me.

  “Yes.”

“Good. I’ve got some recommendations for PR reps to get this under control and take your name out of the headlines.” Grant said. “Let me get you home, and I’ll talk with you and Knox.”

“Fine,” I said. I followed him out and kept my head turned away from the reporters trying to get me riled up and pissed off. One of the assholes decided to call Chloe a child and went on to talk about her. I wanted to kill him for even thinking about Chloe. She’s mine. Not for this asshole to talk about. We got into the car, and Grant drove us away from the flashing cameras and reporters in my face.

When we walked into my house, my mom was already at the door. She looked worried and was on the phone talking fast. It took me a moment to figure out she was talking to my dad. Grant walked in and set his things down at the table. He looked at my mom and got her attention with a hand motion. “Are you talking to Knox?”

  She nodded in response.

“Let me speak with him,” Grant said, and my mom handed over the phone.

I tried to listen to their conversation, but my mom came over and started asking me questions. “What happened at the meeting?”

I sighed, “They gave me the termination contract and an NDA. I’m not allowed to talk about much of it. But I’ve been let go. There’s a possibility I might be on a farm team this summer so I can get back to the NHL someday.”

“That’s great. What about Chloe? Have you talked to her?” Mom asked.

“I texted with her right after the meeting. She had some reporters harass her after class, and there were some outside when we got done at the meeting. Somehow the story got leaked.”

“Oh-no.” She whispered, and I saw tears in her eyes. She was worried about Chloe and me. This would be a long road, but hopefully depending on how we handled what’s to come will determine how our futures will be.

“It’s going to be fine. Chloe and I have it. Grant’s been a big help.” I said.

She gave me a hug and spoke softly into my ear. “I’m so proud of the man you’ve become.”

  “Thanks, Mom.”

Grant hooked me up with a PR lady that had been watching this whole thing unfold over the last week. She’s been great. When I got on the phone with Chloe, I told her all about the opportunity to go to the farm team and keep a low profile. It was going to be difficult, but she said she would come with me. Once my mom heard about that she said they were going to put the house on the market and move with us. That was when Brooklyn agreed to come, and we made the decision to move in together over the summer when I started on the Badgers’ farm team.

I don’t know how I got so lucky. Once upon a time, I hadn’t believed in soulmates. But that all changed when I broke and gave in to Chloe Summers.

  Epilogue

  Nix

I started on the farm team about a month ago. It’s been harder than I thought it would be. Rumors circulated around and I was called every name under the sun when it came to Chloe. It got so bad that I had to have security follow me around when I was at the ice rink. I’d been in more fights in the last few months than I had playing for the Knights. It hadn’t surprised me; however, it took some time and some work for the rest of my team to not see me as a child molester.

We had an opportunity to get on the ice with the Badgers for pre-season practice. Chloe and Brooklyn came to cheer us on. It’s one of the only games they can come to without having issues. Chloe’s been harassed at every game she has gone to, and I can’t focus when I’m fearing for her safety.

I got onto the ice and started to warm up before the Badgers got onto the ice. I saw Chloe and Brooklyn out of the corner of my eye and waved. They waved back at me. I saw some of the guys on the Badgers team eyeing them and making some crude gestures. Nothing I hadn’t seen or heard before. Chloe and I had talked before, and they said they would handle it if anything came up. It was a closed game, so I wasn’t too worried. At least until I caught Winters checking out my sister and then it became personal.

I played my heart out, and I must have impressed someone somewhere with my skills because I was being looked at to be put on the Badgers team for the first lineup. A lot of the guys that are on the farm team aren’t expected even to move up. I felt really good about it.

  Almost Two Years Later

I was in the locker room ready to start the first game of the season on the Badgers. My whole family was there to watch me play. So much time had passed, we were hopeful there wouldn’t be any backlash from the scandal with Chloe. She was almost twenty years old, and no one really cared.

Brooklyn came with her, and they sat with my parents. They were talking about having to leave just a little early because Chloe had to get into work early the next day. I had been so impressed with Chloe, she had gotten an amazing opportunity with Fuller-Evans Publishing with an editor name Yvonne Douglas. She’s been such a role model for Chloe.

The nights she’s up late reading through manuscripts are the nights I wish I could just have her all to myself, but I know I would be taking her away from something she truly loves. One day she wants to be on the editor’s team, and hopefully, she will get to run her own imprint for Fuller-Evans. She would deserve it, and Yvonne knows it.

It wasn’t long into the game when Chloe and Brooklyn disappeared from the seats. I kept an eye for them to return, but it never happened. When I got to my phone, I texted Chloe to make sure she was okay. When she reassured me they were fine and that Brooklyn had something spilled all over her, and she had to get a new shirt.

I was already out and waiting for them when I saw Chloe and my sister walk out. For some reason when I saw her walking across the parking lot, my eyes weren’t on them but on Kane Winters who was staring straight at my sister. When I looked at her, she was being shy, and that was when I noticed the shirt she was wearing. It was Winters number, and you could tell she wasn’t wearing a bra. What the hell happened?

Winters was basically drooling as he watched my little sister walk toward us. “You need to back off. That’s my sister, and that’s my girl. You get me?” I growled at him.

“I got ya,” Winters said. Then, he looked away until I had to actually introduce them to each other.

I knew I wasn’t going to let them near each other so I didn’t care. I hurried them along and got Brooklyn in the car with my parents and Chloe came
back home where I made love to her for the next few hours.

I had everything I could ever want right in front of me, and there was no turning back.
