A Cowboy's Song

Ty and West wandered over, after having their manly conversation about the renovation. Ty draped his arm around Piper and pulled her close. “We’re going to take the ATVs out but we’ll be back for dinner.”
Tara cocked her head. “Speaking of which. We need to talk about your living situation. Your cabin…”
“I know. You’re getting more people than expected wanting to sign up, thanks to Ms. Country Music Star here. I’m working on it.”
Piper glared at Tara. “He owns a quarter of this ranch. You can’t kick him off his land, you know.”
Ty laughed. “Come on, momma bear. I got us covered.”
They got on the ATVs and she followed him toward the original ranch, but in a direction she hadn’t been before. They crossed the drive to the original house and continued a short way over a small rise to a valley where he stopped. It was a gorgeous valley, just hidden from the road. The rise overlooked the valley and the mountains in the distance, and it looked like pristine pastureland. She got off the ATV and came up next to Ty, hooking her arm through his.
“What is this place?”
“We all kind of found our own places on the ranch when we came here. I liked coming here because I felt like I could see forever. I used to picture my family here, wonder if they’d like it here. My sister would have loved it, I think. She liked animals and being outside. And my dad always wanted to go hiking. Mom liked picnics and just being with us. So, when I came to the ranch and I needed some alone time, I used to come out here and sit on the little hill and imagine my family with me, having a picnic. When I started playing again, I brought my guitar.”
Tears were flowing down her cheeks as she listened to him, the raw emotion in his voice. “I think your family was with you out here. They’re always with you.”
He nodded. “I’d like to build my new family here. With you. When we inherited the ranch, we all said we could pick a spot where we could live. I never expected to do that, but I thought we could build a house right here, looking out over this valley. We don’t bring the cows here, so we won’t smell anything. We’re close to the road so we could build a studio, so you won’t have to drive to Missoula so often.”
She stared at him. “A studio, right here? You’d want that part of our lives right here?”
He shrugged. “Music is too much a part of our lives already. Working with the kids, I thought we could consider doing a more formal kids’ program, maybe even something associated with the ranch. I spoke with West and Tara, maybe some kind of youth program for a week in the summer where we bring kids here for a music program. I think there might be more kids who could use music in their lives, more kids like me.”
Tears were streaming down her cheeks, and she sniffled. “I’d love that. Working with the kids has been wonderful and I think we could make a difference. I never thought I’d want to do that but working at the school has been amazing.”
He hugged her. “We can make our own music right here. And our own home.”
She leaned back. “I have so many plans. We could call some of my contacts back home. I’m sure they’d help, coming out and volunteering for the week. And I’ll bet I know some teachers. We need some help coordinating and starting the program. So much to do.”
She started to walk away, already planning in her head, but he tugged her back, pulling her against his body. “Wait a minute. What about me?”
“What about you? You can be a part of it.”
He ran a finger down her cheek, swiping the tears from it. “Are you going to marry me or what?”
She pulled free and planted her fists on her hips. “Was that meant to be a proposal, Ty Evans? Because it sucked. Haven’t you watched any movies? I’m sure your brothers did a better job proposing than are you going to marry me or what.”
He pretended to be outraged. “I gave up my ranch for you. Packed up my dog and everything. Does that say anything?”
She looked around. “And yet here we are, on your ranch. Seems like I gave up everything.”
He laughed, a booming sound that echoed down the hill. “You’re going to keep me on my toes, aren’t you?”
She folded her arms primly in front of her. “The least you could do is write me a song.”
He pulled her close, even while she remained stiff and unyielding in his arms. “Nope, not until our wedding. Besides, anyone could do that. I’m going to love you until the day I die. Be with you forever. And never let you go, no matter where you go, what you do, or whatever happens. I love you, Piper Raines. Be my wife, forever and always. Be my family.”
Aw damn. He had to play that card. She threw her arms around his neck and pulled him down. “I love you, Ty Evans. Thank you for seeing me and loving me when no one else did.”
“Always, my love.”
