But she remembered Scott.

She remembered how scared he had been when she first met him.

And then she remembered the hero that he had turned into.

The man that saved her life.

She kept him in her heart and in her mind and she ran along the beach with Haz, with Lionel, with the wind behind her.

She looked out at Britain across the sea and she smiled.

  Because people might’ve died.

  She might’ve been through hell.

Life would never be the same again.

But it was going to be better for it.

She was going to teach her kids to be kind. And they were going to teach their kids to be kind. And everyone was going to teach everyone to be kind.

Because the history books would talk forever about the great blackout of 2017.

And the history books would talk about the strength and the kindness of people like Scott Harvard.

Because it was people like him who changed the world.

It was the kindness and bravery of people like him who had made this new world a better place.

And it was going to be better.

It was going to be stronger.

It was going to be kinder.

  Forever.

AND SOMETIMES WHEN she went to sleep at night, she was back by the car she’d collapsed by, perched in the snow, totally exhausted and totally weak. She held Lionel and she smiled, the feeling disappearing from her legs, from her body, from everywhere.

And as she thought about how beautiful and perfect life in the future could be—Haz alive, the world rebuilding, everything better and everyone kinder—she saw a figure walking towards her, standing over her.

  “Holly?” he said.

And when she heard his voice, she smiled.

Because she knew he was still here.

She knew he hadn’t gone away.

And she knew he was going to get her to safety, just like she’d imagined, and just like he’d promised.

“I’m here,” Scott said. “I’m here.

  And she believed him.

Because he was a part of the new world.

And he would always be by her side.

  Forever.
