Teach Me Your Love

by Rita Hestand

  She stretched, "I like that."

"He is the son I have prayed for. Look at his beautiful hair, like his mother." He told her then stared down at her. "And you are the woman I never thought I'd find. Your sweetness, your beauty, and your faith in me and our God makes me a stronger man. I love you with all my heart."

She rested now and smiled at the proud father who could not take his eyes from his son. The love she saw in his eyes made her heart swell. A strong sense of happiness filled her soul.

"And you are the man that taught me your love! The man that gave me a new life, a true love, and such hope for our future." she smiled. "Now we are three, and I hope I can give you many more babies."

He came to sit beside her now, holding their child in his arms, and caressing her cheek with his thumb. "No matter how many, it is enough. For I can see the future of the world in his eyes."

She smiled, so content with her life, so fulfilled.

In 1871 Red Elk and Big Hand moved north east to Camp Ord, later named Ft. Apache, and joined General Crook in fighting the outlaw Apache Geronimo for over fifteen years and in 1886 they were successful when Geronimo surrendered. At the time General Crook had over fifty Indian scouts fighting and working on Geronimo's capture. Both Red Elk and Big Hand were rewarded for their hard work and the White Mountain Reservation was established for the Chiricahua's Apache.

Happiness filled their wickiup for many years, filling it with love and seven babies, four boys and three girls. Red Elk became one of the most respected of his tribe for making them a success where others had failed. He kept the peace for his tribe and there were many years of laughter, good crops and many trades. When the crops began to fail, he studied ranching. Red Elk and Big Hand moved to quarters at Fort Apache. They scouted for many years for the army. But Red Elk and Big Hand continued to help the tribe thrive, learning the ranching business, and keeping the peace they had known for years. To find acceptance Red Elk told the soldiers at Ft. Apache that his wife, like him was a breed. They all accepted that. It was a lie, but it managed to keep the peace for many years. Strangely, in her heart, Naomi had long ago become an Apache!
