Tiana snorts. “You won’t be saying that in a hundred years.”

A pang of guilt hits me. It’s so unfair that I’ll be able to live thousands of years while the rest of the world ages. I didn’t tell my parents about the Bond when we last talked, just two days ago, only that my work was going well and that I needed for nothing.

They’re just glad that I’m safe and sound after the heart-attack I gave them.

“I know, I know. I should be grateful.”

Tiana smiles. “You didn’t ask for this. You don’t have to feel guilty for having it. You don’t owe those men anything.”

“But I can fix them.” The words burst out of me. If I think there’s any possibility of a future with those three Aurelians, I have to believe them. I have to believe that Daran can choose me over his pride. I have to believe that Riff will stop trying to be different from his father and just be himself. I have to believe that Kreos – poor Kreos – can believe himself to be worthy of having happiness with me, instead of being a brute and an enforcer for Daran’s gang.

“Then fix them. What are you doing here? I’ve watched you work on Mr. Gemin’s sculptures. You’re just going through the motions. When you get your hands on clay and mold those three perfect men… Then you’re alive. I don’t believe that the Bond can create fake feelings in you, Petra. I don’t believe it can control your mind. Are you ever going to be able to look at another man again?”

I shake my head slowly. “No. I just… Maybe I should just be alone. I can’t take the pain of falling in love with them and losing them – not when someone fights them for control of Tatonia.”

Tiana sits down beside me, exhaling. “If there’s a chance you have a future with them, you have to go to them.”

Lights flare in warning. The sky turns red as alarm bells ring.

“What the hell is going on?”

Tiana shudders. “I have no idea – but it doesn’t sound good.”

There’s nowhere to run. If this ship is under attack, it won’t matter if I hide under trees or cower in my home. Through the glass of the roof I see with horror an army of ships approaching.

There might be one last chance. Maybe the three Aurelians can get here in time to save me. I open the Bond, and gasp as I feel the three men here.

  “It’s them! It’s the Aurelians!”

Tiana almost passes out with relief. “Oh, thank the Gods. I thought we were done for.”

But what the hell are they doing here?

“We need to see you. Tell your boss to let us in,” comes the thought from Daran. I open a line of communication to Mr. Gemin.

“What in the name of the Gods is happening?” Mr. Gemin yells.

“I’m… I’m sorry. They found me somehow – the Aurelians. You need to let them into the shields, or they might… They might do something,” I say.

It takes a few minutes to convince Mr. Gemin, but eventually the gates open. I sit in the forest until I see the three Aurelians striding towards me.

Suddenly, they’re here. I’m paralyzed, my heart pounding. Daran, Riff, and Kreos are standing right in front of me.

They followed my aura to me – across trillions of miles of space.

I stand up from the stone seat and walk towards them like I’m in a trance.

“What… What are you guys doing here? The nerve! You’ll lose me my job!”

Riff grins that cocky smile. “What, making sculptures of an old, fat man? You should thank us!”

Kreos boxes his ears. His aura is full of utter need for me as he drinks me up with those charcoal eyes. They ignite with fire as he looks at me, but I hold my hand up.

“Stop! I left you guys for a reason.”

Daran nods. “We chose wrong, Petra. I’ll spend the rest of my life making up for that mistake. Petra, it’s over. The planet is ours. It’s safe. I’m… I’m sorry for what we did.”

The proud man is apologizing to me – perhaps the only apology he’s made in his hundreds of years of life.

I shake my head. “No. It’s not enough. If someone else comes for that planet, you’ll fight them, too – even if it’s against insurmountable odds. You can’t escape your pride, Daran – and, dammit, those two will always follow you into battle.”

Kreos and Riff stand there awkwardly, not arguing.

Daran sighs deeply. “We knew when we were coming here that we would have to give up everything we fought for to have you. Petra. So, it’s over.”

I pause, looking at Daran. I can feel a shift in him.

“I’ve left, Petra. My most loyal men have followed me, but I will never fight for Tatonia again.”

“But… but… What if…” My words are jumbled. Riff steps towards me, and his cocky grin melts into a warm smile.

“There’s only one thing left we’ll fight and die for. You, Petra. Only you. Owning a world is nothing compared to owning you.”

I shudder at his words. The three men stand in front of me.

Then they go to their knees as one. Even kneeling, they’re nearly as tall as me, broad and powerful.

This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening.

Daran pulls one of his three Orb-Rings from his finger and holds it out. “Petra, I have laid my past to rest. The past is gone from my world. You are my future. Will you marry me?”

I step forward, so unsure. He simply stays there, frozen still – like a gorgeous, perfect statue.

Riff smiles so wide that it must hurt his cheeks. “This coin has been with me since as long as I can remember. I want you to be with me for the rest of my life.” A golden ring appears in his hand. I realize he melted down the coin to craft it.

My heart is pounding. I can’t believe this is really happening.

Kreos sighs out deeply. I gasp as I realize his eyes are wet. “Petra. I do not deserve you. Every moment I think, I think of you. I need you, my Queen. I melted down the battle-axe. No more will I fight for anything but you.”

“Oh Gods,” I murmur. I can’t believe what I’m about to do. I have no idea what the future is going to hold for me, but I can feel the truth in their words. They would do anything for me. They would give up anything for my life.

The next thousand years will be full of adventure, danger, and the unknown. Only one thing is certain. If I say yes, they will be at my side for eternity.

“Yes,” I say, and seal my love for the three men forever.
