I stared at him. “Let’s hear it.”

But before he could speak, a tug on the connections to my pride came through. As if . . . as if my brother and those I loved were far closer than they should have been.

I ran—okay, more like stumbled—to the side of the roof that looked toward the land. “Can you see them? Maks, Lila, do you feel that?”

“I do,” Lila whispered. “I can feel them all!”

Cassandra flicked her beak. “Come, I will take you.”

I climbed up on her back, and Maks followed. Lila clung to me as we rose in the air and swept away from the rooftop.

“I can feel them too,” Maks said. “But how could they have come so far, so fast?”

I had a feeling I knew. And I was both grateful and horrified.

An army of unicorns would do it. Just as Arin had said she’d seen in her visions.

The rhuk dove down to the sands of the desert and I slid off her back. I could see them coming now, even through the dust storm that the herd had billowing around it.

In the lead was Bryce and Kiara riding Balder and the black mare.

The entire unicorn herd had come from Mamitu’s stronghold, and they’d brought my pride with them.

Maks held up a fist and gave a greeting roar that I’d never heard from him, the sound sending shivers up and down my spine and giving me the urge to join him. Ah, fuck it.

I lifted a fist and let out my own roar, the sound of a jungle cat erupting out of me.

Bryce answered us with a roar of his own, one that drove away some of my fears, one that echoed across the sand. The bellow of a male lion come to protect his family. To protect me. My family was here, and it took all I had not to have a little breakdown. Because it was one thing to know your family loved you, but another entirely when they showed up in the hardest points of your life.

“We can do this,” Lila said. “Then imitate the action of the lion; stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood.” She bumped her head against mine.

Lila was abso-fucking-lutely right. We would face Asag together.

And then he would see what it meant to take on the guardians of the desert.
