Chapter 1
Maccon
Blood dripped from the tip of the knife gripped in my right hand. It tapped and splattered on the plastic-covered flooring as a bellowing growl came rumbling out from deep within me.
The air was chillingly still.
My breathing was level and soft as I stared down at the lifeless body at my feet.
Another day.
Another casualty.
Another enemy vanquished.
The Renegade Kings were about to be warned.
Throwing their signature King of Swords tarot card down on top of the corpse, the message was sent. Now we would wait for them to come to us. We were ready. The war hadn’t been started by the Unacceptables, but we would finish it. One battle was won, but there were surely more to come—an inevitable truth I knew all too well.
I never killed anyone who didn’t deserve it. I wasn’t a bloodthirsty murderer like some would think. The fact of it was that once I had a target, there was no saving that poor soul. This last one was no different than the rest—a poor excuse for a human being, complete scum of the earth. He was a rapist who’d attacked the old lady of one of my club members one night outside a roadhouse bar.
I would never forget that call or the aftermath of what that sociopath did to Katherine.
“Maccon.” Reese’s voice shot through the speaker, breaking sharply as soon as I picked up my phone in the middle of the night.
“Yeah?” I coughed, rolling out of bed. My eyes stung from lack of sleep as I flipped on the bedroom light to get dressed.
“It’s Katherine. Something terrible has happened. Get here.”
My VP wasn’t one to send up alert flags up without cause. The tremble in his voice was enough to send daggers into my heart. Something was seriously wrong.
I hung up the phone as my tired wife stirred a little in our bed.
“What’s going on?” Allie mumbled, trying to shift into a sitting position.
Leaning over, I kissed her softly. “I’ll be back soon. Nothing to worry about.”
Gripped my arm, her doe eyes fluttered as they strained to focus on my face. “Be safe.”
“I always am.”
My thundering steps heaved down the stairs, out the door, and into my truck. I drove like a bat out of hell for the few miles to Reese’s house, operating on autopilot.
Walking into the small home without knocking, horror overtook me.
Reese was sitting on the floor with his wife bloodied and hysterical in his arms. Her body was covered in cuts and bruises, her clothes torn and stained.
“What the fuck happened?” I roared, rushing toward the couple huddled in the middle of their living room.
“Katherine had just finished up her shift at the Red Crow when a guy grabbed her out back. I should have been there. Honey, I am so sorry.” Reese’s face was blood red as he tried to comfort her.
“We’ll fix this, but you need to get her to the hospital.” I pulled both of them up to their feet, whisking Katherine’s small frame into my arms. “I’ll drive.”
We rushed for Reese’s pickup where it was parked out front. This wasn’t the first time we had done this with Katherine, and the feeling of déjà vu was all-consuming.
“Have you called Jett?” I asked, putting her in the back seat with Reese.
“No!” she wailed while crawling into h
er husband’s safe embrace. “He can’t see me like this.”
Reese tried to reason with his wife. “Baby, we need to tell your brother.”
“Jett will do something stupid. Promise me you’ll handle this, Maccon.”
I looked back at her through the rearview mirror as I sped to the closest emergency room. Her pleading, bloodshot eyes ripped through me as I responded, “I promise.”
It was an undertaking I was glad to fulfill. Katherine was right—her husband and brother were both too emotional to deal with the problem objectively. Either one of them would have ambushed the douchebag in a crowded bar or on the street. I was more patient, more methodical.
The Renegade Kings had never been on our radar before. They kept to themselves and so did we. Now, though, with the tides turning, a peaceful rivalry had twisted into two armies of adversaries who would stop at nothing to protect their clubs and families.
I walked out of the isolated cabin hideout into the muggy Arkansas air. With every trudge of my boots down the front steps, the weight of the situation lifted. I had done my job well.
“It’s done,” I stated, sitting down at the head of the Unacceptables’ war room table just as all of my men took their respective seats.
“Was he alone?” Reese, my number two, radiated bloodlust as he eyed me. Katherine was still understandably shaken up from what the villain had done only a few days before, and I knew Reese would stop at nothing to make every member of the Renegade Kings pay for one member’s sins.
“He was,” I confirmed. “Foolish mistake.”
Reese’s tattooed hands fisted as his jaw clenched. “That it was,” he snarled.
“What do we do next?” Jett glanced over at me, scowling. He was my right hand and one of the best men I knew, but he was also a wild card we had to watch out for. A slight twitch came to his eye, and I knew he wouldn’t sit idle for long. Without a clear path, he’d take matters into his own hands. It wasn’t just our brotherhood he needed to protect—Katherine was his little sister and the only true family he had left. He had almost lost everything to save her once before, and I knew he’d risk it all again for her without question.
Pulling in a sharp breath, I knew my response was not going to be received well. “We wait and let the other charters know what’s going on here. We might need some backup depending on what their next move is, but we’ll be ready.”
I looked across the table to my old man as he nodded, and I breathed a sigh of relief. His approval meant everything to me.
The president’s flash wasn’t something I felt ready for, but it was my cross to bear. Once my father had decided to step down in his old age, the seat was my birthright to fill.
“How can you agree with this, Hawk? How can we just sit on our hands and wait?” Jett slammed his fist onto the worn mahogany. “All of those fuckers need to pay for what happened to my little sister! This isn’t just some cut slut we’re protecting here.”
“My son is right and you know it,” my old man seethed as he stood to address the tense room. “The piece of shit who hurt Katherine has been taken care of. Our end of the bargain has been upheld. Those assholes know who we are and what we’re capable of. They know where to find us when they want to, something I am sure will happen sooner rather than later. We will stay on high alert and let them come to us. We have to be smart about this. We can’t afford to have mass casualties from hasty stupidity.” Hawk’s low voice thundered into my men as they all nodded in agreement.
I wasn’t an idiot. I knew the guys thought I wasn’t ready to hold the gavel, and it was my responsibility to prove to them I was worthy of being their leader.
“Aye, boss.” Jett glared at me. “I’m with you, brother.”
That was all I needed to hear.
I slapped Reese on the shoulder. “Go home and take care of your girl. It’s been a long couple of days for all of us.”
Once the meeting adjourned, I pulled out my cellphone. There was one call I needed to make on my own.
As I stared down at the contact lighting up the screen, my father slowly approached.
“You good, son?” he asked, standing over me with a concerned look only a father could give.
“Yeah, Pop. It’s time for the Butcher to come home.” Furrowing my brow, I looked my old man in the eye as they narrowed at me.
He sucked in a long drag from his cigarette before responding. “I think you’re right.”
I waited for my father to join the rest of the guys in the lounge room before making the call.
“Yeah?” a gruff voice answered quickly.
“Ravage?” I choked out.
“Maccon? Is everything all right?” Rave’s voice was low.
“We may have just started a war, and we need you back out this way as soon as possible.”
“Abel and I will leave first thing in the morning. See you soon, kid.”
“Thanks, brother.”
Ravage Hellock, the president of the Vilas chapter of our organization, was as fearless as they came. Between him and his stepson, Abel, we would be able to handle anything the Renegade Kings threw at us with ease—I was sure of it.
Chapter 2
Maccon
“Allie?” I called up the stairs as I finally walked back into my home.
Like an angel glowing in the moonlight, my wife glided into view in her white nightgown. Her long blonde hair framed her tired, smiling face.
“It’s about time you came home,” she teased as I rushed up the steps and gathered her in my arms, resting my stubble-ridden face on her soft cheek.
“I’m sorry I’m so late, sweetheart. The meeting took longer than I anticipated.” Meeting—a horrible front that didn’t fool my girl.
As she looked up at me with her stormy green eyes, her hand landed on my cheek. “Is everything all right?”
She could see right through me every damn time—a bittersweet reminder of the dangerous life I had chosen for us.
“It is now,” I told her, sighing as she relaxed into my arms. Running my hand over her stomach, I felt a subtle kick from our baby girl.
“She’s been restless all night. I think she’s been anxiously waiting for her daddy to come home, just like her mama.” The sweetest grin popped on Allie’s face as I melted from her words.
“Don’t worry, princess,” I whispered to Allie’s belly. “Daddy is home.”
Allie ran her thumb over my swelling cheek below a fresh black eye. I could see it all over her face—she was proud of me.
Grabbing my hand, Allie pulled me down the stairs. “Time to talk all this out or you’ll never get a wink of sleep tonight and you know it, Mr. Allred.”
“You’re always right, Mrs. Allred.” I followed my very pregnant wife to the kitchen—I knew better than to argue with her.
Grabbing the bottle of Jameson from the top of the fridge and a glass for me, she sat at the table like she did every time I came home like I just had. It was our little tradition, one that had become an important process for me to cope with the stress of my lifestyle.
I watched her yawn and couldn’t help but feel selfish for keeping her up.
“It’s late, darlin’. You really should be sleeping,” I protested.
“It’s one drink, Maccon.” She pointed to the chair across the table, pursing her adorable strawberry lips.
I pulled the chair out. “As you wish,” I relented.
She poured the amber liquid and slid it over to me before getting up to grab the first aid kit out of the cupboard next to the refrigerator.
“Give me that hand,” she demanded. As she tended to my busted knuckles, she muttered, “Out with it. Today wasn’t just any ol’ day.”
“Remember the shit that happened with Katherine a few days ago?” I ducked my head, hating and loving the words that were going to fall into the air.
She nodded as her smile twisted into a hateful glare.
“He was part of the Renegade Kings.”
My wife’s han
ds flew up to cover her mouth. “Does that mean…?”
My old lady wasn’t naïve to the life we lived, and I didn’t hide anything from her. She was my backbone and the heart of my club.
“Everything is going to be fine. I took care of that son of a bitch. He’ll never attack another woman or breathe another breath,” I reassured her before chugging down the contents of my glass.
“We’re in danger, aren’t we?” Her voice was even and calm.
“You know I will protect you and our little girl. Nothing is going to happen to either of you.” I took her hand. “I promise.”
“I know that, Maccon. I love you.” Her fingertips softly traced the skull and bones tattooed on my forearm.
“And I will always love you.” I shoved away from the table and scooped my wife into my arms in one swift motion. “Now, let’s get you to bed. You’re sleeping for two, after all.”
Flinging her arms around my neck, she kissed me quickly. “Who would have thought Prince Charming wore leather and his steed was a Harley?”
“All those fairytale books got it wrong, babe.”
“That they did,” she cooed as I laid her down on our plush bed.
Climbing in after her, I tucked Allie close into my side. She rested her head in the crook of my shoulder as I rubbed her stomach, and there was nowhere else I would have rather been in that moment.
