“Take a look at this side of Angel’s brain. As you can see, it’s partially shaded. This indicates that she is herself only half of the time. She went around for several years believing in her heart that she was raising her younger sister, but you see, she is the only child. Her younger sister was her when she was younger. She never saw it that way.” Dr. Dozey went back to sit down so that the DA could quiz her.
The DA was a handsome young black man. He was clean-cut and had an expensive suit on. I surely wouldn’t mind fucking him once or twice. Now wasn’t the time to have such thoughts in my head. I couldn’t help it, though. He walked up to Dr. Dozey and began to prove his case.
“So, Dr. Dozey, what you are saying is”—he turned to me—“Angel was not mentally there when all of these killings occurred?”
“That is correct.”
“So while you were studying her, did you ever figure out why she felt she needed to kill these innocent men?”
“Well, from what I discovered, she saw who she thought was her child’s father whenever she slept with someone. She would grow angry, and she would kill them. It was only in her mind that she would finally get to see the child he had kept from her.”
The DA smiled and went on to say, “So if we let her off, you mean to tell me every baby mama who sleeps around has the right to kill their alleged baby daddy?” He raised his brow.
“No, I’m not saying that at all,” she answered. The jury looked like they were siding with the DA.
“You see, Angel is a mass murderer. There is no other way to put it. She’s not crazy in the head. She’s just bitter,” the DA declared.
At that moment I wanted to spit in his damn face.
He went on. “After she hideously killed her father, she wrote Closure with his blood on the wall. If you ask me, she wanted to kill him for all the things he did to her. Now that he’s dead, she’s at ease. She hasn’t killed a soul since then. Like the wall said, she got her closure.”
I looked at the jury. Some of them were shaking their head, as if they agreed with him.
“She’s a mass murderer. That insanity card is going to let her and a whole lot of other serial killers in this world go kill more people!” He turned to me. “Do you see an insane woman sitting right there?” He turned to the jury and said, “I do not. Before you leave here today, take a look at all these grieving families who lost their loved ones at the hands of this alleged crazy woman.” He sat in his chair.
The judge said that we would take a recess while the jury reached a verdict.
I looked behind me and saw my mother and Omar together. The two people I loved the most. Through all the lies, hallucinations, and deaths, they were still here for me, at my side. I didn’t know how this would end, but my gut told me it wouldn’t end how I had planned for it to.
Mr. Bennifeld was in my ear, telling me that if I was let free, I would have to enroll in counseling.
“You know we took the plea bargain if the judge finds you guilty, right?”
I nodded my head, as if to say yes.
“Okay, just making sure you’re clear as to what we have done.”
The plea bargain would allow me to serve life in jail, with no death row. I didn’t give a damn what we took. Either way it went, I was in jail forever. I looked back at Omar, who mouthed, “I love you.” I smiled and mouthed it back.
After three long hours, the jury had come up with a verdict. My heart was in my lap. I had no clue how this was going to surface. Mr. Bennifeld had represented me the best that he could. There was no way that I would be mad at him if I lost the case.
“All rise for Judge Raymond,” said the bailiff.
We all stood up as the judge made his way to his seat. “You may now be seated,” said the judge once he was back on the bench. We all sat down and awaited my fate. The judge looked over at the jury and asked, “Have you reached a verdict?”
A middle-aged white lady who was standing at a microphone said, “Yes.”
“Please read us what you have.”
“On this day, October twelve, two thousand nine, we the jury find the defendant, Angel Crystal Jacobs . . .”
