Chapter One
Cassandra
“No,” I snapped, returning my gaze to the document I’d been studying.
“Come on, Cas, you need to get a life. You keep telling me you don’t have time for a relationship. This is the perfect solution.” My best friend sat her ass on the edge of my desk, pushing some of my paperwork out of the way.
Sighing, I sat back to study her. “I’m not as confident as you, Meg. I’m sure you have no problem wandering into a sex club and finding yourself a partner for the night, but I couldn’t look them in the eye. I’ve never even had a one-night stand.”
She snatched the piece of paper from my hand to demand my full attention. “Actually, that’s the beauty of it. There are different levels, some of which you can see and chose your partner for the evening, but when I want to be anonymous I visit The Midnight Rooms.”
My eyebrow arched at the name. I knew I was a prude by my friend’s standards. I could count on one hand the number of men I’d had sex with, and each of them were serious relationships.
Megan enjoyed the female sexual revolution that was awarded to us after many women burnt their bras and got us the right to vote. She was a sexual predator who would beat any cougar in a fight for dominance. Five-foot-four with no shoes on, she had blonde hair, blue eyes, and boobs that made their way into the room before she arrived. Megan was the type of woman men fantasised about when they were masturbating in the shower in the morning.
I was five-foot-six with brown hair, green eyes, and far too many curves for my generation. My hourglass figure was the bane of my life, the gym my nemesis. Still, I dragged my rotund ass there with the hope that one day I would discover the body that I wanted.
“Give me a good reason why not,” Megan persisted, pursing her red lips together while she stared at me.
“I can give you several,” I replied, holding my hand up. “One, sexual diseases; two, pregnancy; three...”
She cut me off with a wave of her hand. “Before you’re accepted as a member, you have to undergo a medical exam. Every so often, they take a blood test to make sure you’re still clean. Use a condom, take the pill, get an implant. This isn’t the last century, Cas. Just try it,” she pleaded.
“What if my clients see me?”
A smirk appeared on her face, as she always got her own way. “In the dark? Hell, I won’t even recognise you!”
I buried my face in my arms and she squealed. If all else failed, I could hide in a dark corner for an hour and go home. She’d never know. I never got to win any of our arguments. Megan was a tyrant and the best divorce solicitor in London. I could see why her clients were terrified of her.
Which was how I found myself lying on a cold examination table with my knees up around my ears, and a stranger about to swab my lady garden to ensure I was free from any sexually transmitted diseases. In the twenty-first century, you’d think there would be an easier way.
I could hear Megan chatting happily on her phone in the background to one of her clients, telling them not to give in over visitation rights of the dog.
“This will feel a little cold and then a stretch, but it’ll be over in a moment,” said the too cheery doctor wielding a speculum.
What the hell had I gotten myself into?
You had to be recommended by someone who was already a member, and by my understanding, a high-ranking member. It certainly explained Megan’s busy social life. She was obviously saving herself a fortune on batteries for her plastic boyfriend who lived in her bedside table. Poor guy was probably catching up on some well-deserved rest inside a fluffy sock.
I jumped when the doctor opened me wide enough to examine my tonsils from down there.
“Sorry!” she sang in her super happy voice. “These things have a mind of their own.”
I was going to kill Megan for this. Dark thoughts flooded my mind as the doctor started her swabbing. It reminded me of my first boyfriend who was obsessed with working out your anatomy. Two virgins trying to work out sex spelt disaster. By the time he finally got it inside me, I was sore from his nails and poking. Someone should have bought him a wooden shape box as a child, the type that made you learn that the long pole went into the round hole. Two thrusts and he was done, and I was left lying there staring at the ceiling like I was at this exact moment, sore and unfulfilled.
“We need to get a blood test from you,” the doctor said, standing and waving my swabs in the air as if I’d won a prize. I continued to glare at the ceiling.
“A little prick and it’ll all be over,” she continued to chat while I sat on the side of the be
d with no panties on and a strip of what looked like a huge toilet roll over my lap to cover what remained of my dignity.
Her words make me giggle, and Megan shot me a dark look of reproach. I thought this was the entire point of me being here. The small prick.
I shrugged at Megan as she continued to argue about the custody of a dog named Molly.
All this so my friend would be happy that I was sexually satisfied.
What was wrong with a cup of strong tea and a chocolate biscuit before going to bed?

“I normally just shave my legs,” I argued with Megan.
“Sensations are different in the darkness,” she replied. “Without your sight, your touch becomes more sensitive, small hair growth feels like a thistle.”
My eyes widened and I glanced at the beautician watching us from behind her desk.
“I’m not that hairy,” I hissed.
Megan smiled benignly. “Your garden is overgrown because some prick decided to violate it with his filthy cheating dick. Now it needs a qualified gardener to prune it into an acceptable shape for entertaining.”
The beautician’s mouth dropped open.
“She’ll need a manicure and a pedicure as well,” Megan instructed her, typing on her phone. That thing was constantly attached to her, and I dreaded to think where she put it when she went into the ‘Midnight Rooms’.
“For the dark?” I asked incredulously. “Who the hell is going to see the colour of my toenails when I’m lying on my back in the black with my legs akimbo?”
A squeak came from the reception desk.
“You will see it,” Megan replied. “Who cares about whateverhisname? When you’re there, you are a goddess to be worshipped. The lacy underwear and nails are for you to feel fucking amazing. Do you know why?”
Both the beautician and I sat forward in our seats.
“Because how you view yourself is half the battle when it comes to good sex. He could have a four-inch cock that he barely knows how to use, but when you feel sexy then you take that four inches of flesh and pound it into submission. Your g-spot connects directly to your clit. Most men don’t know where it is, but you do, so make him fuck you so he hits it every time. It’s your body, and if he doesn’t do it right push him off and find someone who will. I don’t care if he isn’t finished, time is too precious to not get an orgasm.”
My eyes cut to the beautician called Sharon according to her badge and she stared at me in shock. Was she taking notes?
I had hair ripped from my body and bright red polish applied to my nails before I was dragged to a lingerie shop. Megan managed to spend more money on bras and panties than I spent on my mortgage in a month. There was no way I was wearing them into a dark sex den. If I lost the matching panties, I would be on my hands and knees for hours hunting for them with dubious men thinking I wanted to suck their penises.
Okay, life lesson number one. If you want a woman to give you a blowjob, then wash down there first. Groins are sweaty and you pee through it, so at least have the decency to wash it first. Also, I’ve read the romance novels. They’re lying to you when they say that women are desperate to ‘taste you’ or that at the end of it we’re leaking because we’re so turned on. Lies, all lies. That’s why we ‘save them for a special occasion’ because several teeth cleaning and mouth rinses later you’re still sure that there’s an army of sperm in there planning their route to try and find your precious egg even though they’re in the wrong orifice.
“Wow.” Megan smiled, “You look amazing.”
I didn’t look like myself, my eyes were dark and sultry and my lips bright cherry red. The bra pushed me up and the panties were nothing more than a scrap of material.
What the fuck was I doing?
“Look, I know you’re trying to help, but this”—I indicated to myself— “is not me.”
She gave me one of her Mona Lisa smiles. “This is definitely you. Relax, shag a few guys, and break your mould.”
“I can’t,” I groaned.
“You can. The first time with a stranger in the dark is weird. You don’t know whether to speak or to kiss him. Every decision in there belongs to you. They’re clean so if you want to ride them bareback, go for it, if not insist on a condom. Kissing is intimate, so for fleeting encounters, I tend not to. The Midnight Rooms are for hot, dirty encounters with someone you’ll never know in the real world. Use them to find out what you like.”
I opened my mouth to protest again and she shook her head to silence me.
“I’ve watched you move between meaningless relationships. Not one of those men has made your eyes bright with longing when you talk about them. Good sex puts a smile on your face. Great sex makes you grin for no reason. Explosive sex makes you walk around like a zombie because you can’t get it out of your head.”
There was no answer to that.

The building looked like an old townhouse from the outside. Megan led us to the female entrance, and when we walked inside, I realised everything the world saw was just a front. A modern powder room with lockers and full-length mirrors greeted us. Each member had their own locker to keep personal belongings in between visits and lock valuables in. Megan had requested ours were put together. To be honest, I believed it was because she thought I was going to run.
She was right.
There were showers they encouraged the members to use. After all, no one wanted to be exposed to a sweaty groin. To distract myself I headed in that direction, but Megan caught my wrist.
“You showered just before you came out. Some guests come here straight from work.” Her smile told me she knew exactly what I was doing.
An elevator with a bright golden surround sat at the back of the room, illustrating all the places we could go to. Nerves rattled inside me like a cobra ready to strike. I couldn’t do this; I needed to run away and find somewhere to hide.
I stood in nothing more than my expensive underwear and my stilettos that were sure to kill me or break my ankle. Everything was for the illusion. Megan expected me to have sex with a stranger, or perhaps strangers, and strut away and go to work in the morning as if I was the same person.
“Ready?” she whispered.
I nodded once and she led me into the elevator and pressed the black button.

Chapter Two
Cassandra
As soon as the elevator doors closed, we were cloaked in darkness. Megan’s hand found mine and she gave my fingers a reassuring squeeze.
She said it would be dark, but in my head, there would be low lighting and it would be mostly shadows. We walked down a corridor, our heels echoing around us, and the only light was the occasional red glow at a doorway. It wasn’t enough to see by, and Megan remained in blackness at my side.
My palms grew sweaty when I heard voices in the distance.
“You’ll be fine, sweetie,” Megan said in the darkness. “Just remember what I told you. This is about your pleasure, not theirs.”
She gave my fingers another squeeze as we entered what sounded like a larger room. All my impressions were from the sounds around me and I felt small and vulnerable.
A woman giggled to my right. “Hello there, what is that poking in my back?”
A low growl and a chuckle followed it and footsteps echoed away.
I guessed it was a change to the normal, “Do you come here often?”
I stood frozen in place while I listened to the activities around me, whispered greetings followed by departures. Megan’s giggle sounded somewhere to my left before it faded as she moved away.
I was alone with no idea how to find my way out. Groans sounded behind me and I was convinced someone was having sex against the wall. I didn’t want to move because the people down here were attuned to movement in the airwaves. One step and I would be prey.
The sound of flesh slapping against flesh intensified until a woman started screaming.
A man grunted heavily, and I imagin
ed the sound accompanying every thrust of his hips.
I was officially in the Twilight Zone.
Someone stumbled into me and nearly knocked me on my ass.
“Sorry, didn’t see you there!” a deep male voice said. His hand reached out to steady himself and he gripped my arm.
I couldn’t decide if I should run or stand here and pretend to be a statue.
Time stretched on and he didn’t let go of my arm.
“No worries, I didn’t see you either.”
He chuckled and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.
“If you’re free, we could get to know each other.”
I doubted that, but he seemed nice to put me at ease. He never waited for an answer, though. His hand landed with eerie precision on my back and he propelled me as if he knew where we were going.
My feet faltered, and I would have fallen, only he grabbed my arm. “The idea of the shoes is great in theory, but they are a nuisance,” he echoed my thoughts from earlier.
Not knowing what to say, I laughed to cover my awkward confusion.
A dim red glow told me we were entering a room. I tried to catch a glimpse of the man, but I could see nothing in this all-consuming blackness.
His hands landed on my hips and he tugged me back against him. “What do you want?”
I had no fucking idea. Where was Megan when I needed her?
“What position do you prefer? Do I need a condom?” His breath fanned across my shoulder as his hands acquainted themselves with my body. His skin was warm and his chest rough and hairy against my back. His erection pressed against my ass.
Every fibre inside me froze with the realisation of where I was and what was about to happen. I could do one of two things: Run or try something different for a change.
I stopped his hands with mine. “You need a condom. I want you to make me come and I have no preference for position for that to happen.”
