And everything else? Well, what goes around, comes around.

Ever since I’d released that statement, and Stargazers had run the story, Mallory and all our other critics had fallen silent. I would’ve liked to have seen a little crash and burn on the pop princess’ behalf, but ever since I saw the stories about the low ticket sales for her upcoming tour, and the cancelled dates because of it, I’d wondered a lot about how much that karma thing had to do with it.

The truth was always the most powerful weapon when faced with a tsunami of lies. Fancy that.

I caught sight of a familiar rock star strolling along the beach toward me and I grinned. He’d undone his bowtie the first chance he’d got, and the top button of his shirt was hanging open. He carried his shiny dress shoes in his hand and tossed them next to my fancy white heels on the sand.

“What are you doing all the way down here?” he asked, sliding his arm around my waist.

His palm slipped against the silky fabric of my dress—a simple ivory boho-inspired gown with embroidered lace that hugged my body. The deep V-neckline and strappy sheer back were foreign and fancy concepts to me, but the moment Sebastian had seen me in it, he had taken away all my self-consciousness.

“I just wanted to stand back and savour the moment,” I replied, leaning into him.

“Can you fucking believe it?” he asked. “We’re married.”

“What a pair we make, huh?”

He snorted and pressed a kiss on top of my head. My hair was growing back, and it was concealing my scar, but I was half-tempted to shave it off again. Honestly, I kinda liked the hipster punk look.

“I’m so happy,” I said with a sigh. “The pieces have finally fallen into place.”

“I’ll say. Hey, you like it here, right?”

“Why?” I asked, my curiosity rising. “Because right now, I could take it or leave it.”

  He laughed. “You love it.”

  “Secretly.”

“Good, because I bought the beach house on the hill.”

I twisted in his arms, my mouth falling open in shock. “You didn’t!”

“Is that a good ‘you didn’t’ or a bad ‘you didn’t’? Because real estate is non-refundable.”

“It is a great house…” I mused. “Fancy, though. I’m still not used to that.”

“We can live there, holiday there, hang out, rent it out, whatever you want to do. We don’t have to make that kind of decision right away,” he said. “When we find a property for the recording studio, we can decide.”

“Good. I’m about ready for a little quiet time with my husband.” I gave him my best side-eye and added, “You still haven’t told me about our honeymoon.”

Sebastian grinned and turned to face me. “Tomorrow, I’m taking you to Paris.”

I let out an excited squeal and threw my arms around his neck. “Really?”

“Yeah, I’ll even ride that fucking carousel.”

“You swear too much, you know that?”

  “So do you,” he complained.

The waves crashed onto the shore, the water hissing with foam as it raced towards us. It began to roll back not far from our feet and the hem of my expensive wedding dress.

“C’mon,” Sebastian said, holding out his hand, “we’ve got a party to go to.”

I pressed my palm against my stomach, my thoughts going to all the things we’d lost in our struggle to get here. Sometimes it almost felt… No, I’d never feel guilty over the choices I’d made, because they all lead to this moment.

“You okay?” he asked, watching me closely.

“Yeah,” I replied, “I’m fine.” And for the first time in years, I meant it. “I’m starving. I could totally go a sausage in bread.”

“You better not get sauce on your dress,” he said, echoing Vanessa’s scolding from earlier that day.

I laughed and slipped my hand into his. “I wouldn’t dare.”

As we made our way up the beach, I left behind the last part of my ordeal—the fear and the loss—and was reborn.

The scars were a reminder of what I went through, but they didn’t define me. The pain still comes and goes, but I don’t let it shape my choices. I looked to Sebastian, my whole lotta heart, heard the music we created together, and turned to the horizon.
