Love of Truth

Amelia let out a surprised gasp behind me.

“Oh, you didn’t know did you? See how much attention she pays to your commitment to her? She doesn’t care.” Jenny takes a step forward and to the side, trying to get a clear shot at Amelia. I move as Jenny does, guiding Amelia with me. If I had more room I could restrain her.

“Don’t you see that’s what I love about her, she cares about others.” I reach back and pull Amelia close to my back. I take another step to the side, guiding Amelia with me. “She pays attention to the people around her, only wanting to know what she can do for them and give them, not what she can get from them. But the thing I love most about her, is when she receives gratitude, she doesn’t take it for granted.”

Jenny lets out a psychotic laugh. “Oh, she’s so good and giving, that’s what made it easy for me to get close and learn all about her,” Jenny smirks. “Miss Little-Goody here actually let her nerd stalker boy work on her research where he has been able to hack into every aspect of her life.” Jenny takes another step, inching closer. “He was so easy to manipulate. One look and I can see he’s all drooling for teacher.” Jenny’s finger lies on the trigger. “He didn’t even have the heart to go through with the kidnapping to keep her to himself.”

“What have you done to Jason?” Amelia’s concerned voice comes from behind me.

“Oh, don’t worry he’ll likely show up to class on Monday where he’ll realize that his beloved professor is missing,” Jenny pouts playfully.

“That’s enough!” Amelia steps out from behind me. “Please put the gun down. No one wants to get hurt.”

“Are you kidding me? This is the girl you want to marry?” Jenny’s laugh voices the true colors behind her earlier calm façade.

I reach back to pull Amelia back behind me but before I can reach her, the sweeping sound of a tactical baton swipes down on Jenny’s arm seconds before a shot explodes from the gun. Heavy footsteps pound into the room as I scramble to get the gun away from Jenny, while two Portland police officers restrain her.

“Damn, Shorty just whipped the bitch,” Cory kneels down next to Amelia.

I turn to find Amelia sitting on the floor slumped over her right leg. “Amelia, are you hit?”

She hisses a breath between her teeth as she pales from the pain. I kneel and scoop her into my arms. “It burns,” she whimpers. Cory dashes over to the kitchen to grab a towel.

“Medics are on their way up,” one of the officers informs.

“Why would you do that?” I look down at her pale face. “Why didn’t you give me the baton?”

“Jesus, Craig. The girl is shot. Stop interrogating her.” Cory presses the towel onto Amelia’s thigh.

“She was going to sho—shoot,” Amelia whispers to clinched teeth. “C-can’t let her sho-shoot you. Lo-love you,” she breathes.

“Shh, I know, baby.” I kiss her head repeatedly. “Let’s get you to the hospital.”

Two medics rush in and try to stop the bleeding on outside of her right thigh. I hold her to me as the pain starts to consume her, constantly telling her I love her.

“Larry,” she points to the closet when the medics allow me to lift her onto the stretcher.

“I have him, Mel.” Blu walks over holding a scared and whimpering Larry. “We’ll see you in a second, okay?”

Amelia nods as the pain medication starts to take over.

I run along with the stretcher and jump into the ambulance. Holding her hand between mine, promising her I will never let go.

HE LEANS AGAINST the side of the Starbucks building to watch the chaos unfolding across the street. Blue and red lights periodically illuminate his face from the dark night. Tugging at the strap of his messenger bag, he smirks at the end result. Jenny thought he was a fool for not going along with her plans but he knew from the beginning the bitch was not all there. He needed her to play out this scene just to scare the couple and make it easier for him to get what he needed. And well, if her end game worked and Amelia’s dead, it can save him some work. But like he calculated, it didn’t. That’s okay, he’ll find what he needs to get his revenge. This little show is only a preview of what he has in mind.
