“It sounds,” she began, her voice cracking, “like a Christmas miracle.”
Six Weeks Later
Her eyes wide in disbelief, Jane stared up at the red brick house. The gravel crunched beneath the tires of Henry’s Range Rover as it rolled down the driveway, and shifting her gaze to the fields beyond, she saw two horses prancing around a snowy field. A warm tingling traveled through her body, and as the SUV slowed to a stop, she reached out and grabbed Henry’s arm.
“This is the place I saw in my dream,” she breathed, “this is it. Do you remember me telling you? It was when I feel asleep in the bath, and you—”
“I remember,” he interrupted, “of course I remember. How could I possibly forget? You were wrapped in a towel, and I was standing there holding you while you described my family’s home. It was an extraordinary moment.”
“I can’t believe it,” she murmured, her eyes darting between the home and his eyes. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
“At the time, I’m not sure,” he frowned, “but later I decided I’d let it be a surprise.”
“It’s one hell of a surprise,” she exclaimed, then staring at him with a worried frown, she added, “I hope your parents like me.”
“Are you kidding? What’s not to like? Besides, they know how much you helped Sara, and Sara thinks you’re the cat’s meow.”
“The feeling’s mutual,” Jane smiled, “and at least I’ve met one member of your family. Do you think she’s here yet?”
“I don’t see her van anywhere,” Henry replied, “but wait, yes, I do, she and her brood are coming into the driveway right now. Be prepared to be overwhelmed. Her three girls are all chatterboxes, and they’ll take turns interrogating you.”
As Jane and Henry climbed from his car, the minivan pulled to a stop behind them, and three boisterous girls leapt out, squealing and squabbling.
“Good heavens,” Jane declared under her breath, “how does she manage?”
“I don’t think she does,” Henry laughed.
“Hi, Jane,” Sara beamed, following her daughters. “I’m so pleased you could join us. This family can get a bit crazy though. I hope you’re ready.”
“I’ve been ready for this moment my whole life,” she replied, and fighting back her deliriously happy tears, she clutched Henry’s hand as they started toward the front door.
“Just remember,” he whispered. “I promised you a visit to the woodshed in the backyard.”
“Good grief, did you have to remind me just when I’m about to meet your parents? I’ll be totally distracted.”
“That’s the point, you’ll be so busy thinking about the hot bottom you’re going to have, you’ll forget to be nervous.”
“Oh, my God!”
“What?”
“It’s already working.”
He laughed out loud. It was going to be a special Christmas, their first together, the first of many. He would soon be taking her to the south of France. There was a particular dungeon that he couldn’t wait to show her, and when she was in shackles, her arms pulled above her head, and her legs spread wide apart, held by a bar, he’d produce the sapphire engagement ring. He was going to make sure she said yes!
