She looked down at the floor in humiliation. Thane followed her gaze saw a puddle of clear water on the floor.
“Mrs. Davis, I’m fairly certain that’s not pee,” Ena told her.
Brie looked at her with a confused expression.
Ena smiled warmly, and explained, “I believe your water just broke.”
“Sir…” Brie whimpered, looking to Thane.
The possibility that she would deliver early had not occurred to him. Thane’s heart started racing.
The time is here…
“How are you feeling?” he immediately asked her, the Dominant in him kicking in.
“I’m green, Sir,” she giggled. “No labor pains at all.”
“Perfectly normal,” Ena assured her. “But you’ll need to get to the hospital.”
Brie shot Thane a worried glance. “But I’m not due for another three weeks!”
Thane was already on the phone, calling her obstetrician. He struggled to hear the doctor’s instructions over Durov’s loud bellowing.
“Moye solntse can’t come. I haven’t healed yet!”
Thane covered the phone and gave him a stern look. “She is coming. So get your ass ready, old friend. We’re heading to the hospital.”
The entire room burst into excited chatter.
Judy moved over to Brie and gave her a nurturing hug. “Let’s get you to the restroom and freshen up so you can have this baby.” She gently guided Brie out of the room with Ena following close behind.
“Nothing to worry about,” Ena assured Brie with a tender smile. “The same thing happened with my first child…”
Thane felt momentarily lost, unprepared for it to happen three weeks early—and certainly not during a drunken party at the beach.
Gallant put a firm hand on his shoulder. “Everything will be fine. They’ll induce her now that the water has broken. Within the next 48 hours, you will be a father.”
Father…
As Thane took that in, everything seemed to instantly fall back into place.
“Maxim, I need you to prepare a large thermos of coffee, and get Durov in the car,” he ordered.
“Unc, can you go to my place and get Brie’s overnight bag? We left it in the front hall. Oh, and please check on the cat.”
“Of course, Thane. We’ll be happy to.”
“Wallace, can you take my car back to our apartment? We’ll be riding with Rytsar’s entourage.”
Wallace looked stunned. “You’re letting me drive your Lotus?”
“Of course. You even have my permission to take Kylie for a spin before you park her in the garage. A car like that needs to be appreciated.”
Turning to Gray, knowing the man had a special relationship with Brie’s father, he asked, “Could you call Brie’s parents and help them make arrangements to come out?”
“Certainly, Sir Davis.”
Thane looked at Brie and time seemed to stop.
Their lives were about to drastically change.
Brie looked uncertain, thrown off by the unexpected timing of the birth.
He smiled confidently, holding out his hand to her. “Come with me, Brie.”
Her countenance suddenly changed as she took his hand and met his gaze. Thane was reminded of her on collaring night, when he’d helped her out of the elevator after giving up his career at the Training Center.
Now, just like then, a new world was opening up before him and his life would never be the same.
Thane was ready to embrace it—with all its uncertainties and complications.
He had been given this rare second chance…
