Overton pulled me closer to him, careful not to squeeze Serra. “You have no idea how frightened I was.” Tears gathered at the corners of his eyes. “I prayed to God, asking him not to take you both now that I finally have you. My prayers were answered.”

  “Well…I did die.”

  “What?”

“Vidius stabbed me in the heart, but somehow I healed and expelled the knife.”

He kissed me. “No greater proof.” He planted another kiss on my cheekbone. “Why don’t you give me Serra? Go tend to Cyril. I’ve seen him stressed before, but with you two at stake… and Dominic…”

I nodded, beaming down at my daughter. I knew Overton would keep her safe, but I still dreaded handing her over. I laid her in his welcoming arms and tore my gaze away to look at Overton. “You know, I love you, right?”

He smiled. “I never doubted it.”

  CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

  Worth

At the top of the stairs, I steadied myself against the wall as a freshly showered Clarence with a towel around his waist slammed into me. “Shit, Linden, sorry.” He gripped my shoulder trying to steady me.

“It’s OK.” I cleared my throat. “Thank you.”

  “For what?”

I scoffed. “For getting the snot beat out of you protecting Serra and me.”

“Linden, I may not have signed on for all this crazy shit, but you’re my family. Serra is like my niece. I’d do anything to protect you both.”

The sincerity in his words rang clear. “Thank you.”

He wrapped me in his arms. “You have no idea how happy I am to see you. I thought you were dead. Cyril told me you both were OK, and…well…I might have gotten a little weepy.”

I shot him a doubtful side-glance. “You, weepy? Didn’t think it was possible.”

“Well… If I didn’t know Cyril will punish you for all the crazy shit you did, I might be angry. But the big guy has a pretty considerable grasp on you.” He nuzzled my hair. “I’ll let him give you shit.”

  “Gee, thanks.”

He squeezed me tight. “So glad you’re OK.”

  “Me too.”

“He’s in the library if you want to get it over with.”

“Not really, but I think he needs me. Dominic didn’t make it.”

  “Oh, damn.”

  “Yeah.” I frowned.

“Go. Take care of him. I’ll see you downstairs in a bit.”

I nodded and placed my right foot forward, starting my apprehensive path to the library.

Cyril sat in the leather chair with his back to me, his focus on some distant point beyond the window. He didn’t turn to receive me.

Silently, I traipsed to his side and rested my hand on his forearm, then turned to gaze out the window at the lovely landscape outside.

His voice was nearly inaudible. “You know, the view from this window seems so serene. No death. No carnage. Just leagues of green edged by ocean blue. It’s deceptive. It makes you feel like all is right with the world. It makes you forget the danger.”

“But isn’t that a wonderful thing? That even though the world can be cold, there are still these beautiful moments to get us through?”

A defeated sigh left his lips. “Perhaps you’re right.”

“You know it’s not your fault.” I tucked a strand of his hair behind his ear.

“It is, but I know things could have been worse. They could have killed us all. But it doesn’t make it any easier.”

I took two steps to stand in front of him, blocking his field of vision, his grief so tangible that, my heart constricted. I wanted to console him, to take it all his pain away.

In that moment, I loved him more than ever.

  “Cyril?”

“Yes, Light…” His words were despondent as he stared through me instead of at me.

I lowered myself to my knees and peered up into his eyes. “You once honored me with your homage. I’m honored to do the same for you. You asked me if I wanted to be your queen or your wife, and now I know my answer.”

“What is it?” he asked, finally seeing me through his grief.

“Both.” I reached up and began undoing the lacing on his battle-stained shirt. “When I stood in that room with Vidius, I was willing to die to protect our child. In that moment, I was your queen. Strong and formidable, my debatable judgment aside.”

He arched an eyebrow. “It’s hardly debatable. We have no idea what the consequences of your actions might be.”

I tipped my head, accepting his accusation. “In battle, we reign together, but when the weight of the world is on your shoulders, you need a wife, not a queen. A partner, a friend, a lover, someone who wants to take your trouble away. Dissolve the guilt and ease your burden. You’re a father now. I also want to make you a husband.” I grasped the hem of his shirt and lifted it over his head. He didn’t fight me. “Let me show you why I damned the world.”

He rose from his seat, shoving his pants down to a pile at his feet, his mood lifting with my proposal.

I slipped my blood-streaked gown over my head, slid my panties to the floor, and recited a silent thank you for the magical healing which allowed me to recover so soon after giving birth.

He lifted me by the waist, perching me on the window ledge, and stepped between my legs.

I spread them wider, giving him access to my depths. Grasping his cock, I positioned him against my sex.

In one swift movement, he buried himself deep, holding me against his chest. He rocked in and out of my body, sifting through the events of the day as they rushed through my mind.

His thrusts were an intoxicating mixture of sweetness and brutality. I clung to him, riding out his storm. Though his hammering cock and the tips of his sharp teeth promised oblivion, this wasn’t sex. It was connection. Communication in a way unique to us.

He whispered the words I needed to hear. “I forgive you.” With his absolution, his teeth sank deep into my neck, igniting a fire deep inside. I quaked in his arms.

Withdrawing his fangs, he whispered, “Light, more importantly…”

A breathy, “Yes?” was all I could manage.

“I love you.” Deep thrust. “You’ve given me things I never thought possible. You’ve not only made me a king, a husband, and a father but above all else, you’ve made me a man by giving me the best of humanity. I, too, would have damned the world to preserve all this.” He yanked on my hips and pulled me closer to the edge, opening me wider, driving even deeper. His cock pulsed, spilling his seed inside me, filling me the way only he could.

He rested his forehead on mine. Our breaths labored, chests rising and falling in time.

“You know I call you Light, but that’s such an inept description. Tonight, my love, you were the sun.”

“But it was you who started the fire.”

  Maggie’s Mates

  Alexa Fox

A werewolf P.I. A reluctant alpha. And a jaguar princess who just wants to mate...

Maggie Marsh was at the Bayside Club for one reason and one reason only: to mate. As a jaguar shifter, and worse, jaguar royalty, she's kept on a very tight leash. Particularly since her parents are trying to arrange a royal match. But she's in heat—and the burning, throbbing need to find someone to mate with is too powerful to resist. But Matthew's not a high-ranking wolf, and Logan's father was the alpha—until Logan's brother Zane killed him and usurped control of the pack. A duty that should have fallen to Logan. There's no chance a should-be alpha would pay a bit of attention to someone like Matthew. But he has other fantasies besides those involving Logan—fantasies of being with a woman, fantasies of being with a cat shifter. So as the beautiful, black haired jaguar puts the moves on him, he's not about to turn her down.

Logan wants nothing to do with being the alpha or dealing with pack politics. He just wants to leave the country to escape the half million dollar bounty Zane has placed on his head—for his delivery to Zane, dead or alive. But when Matthew's partner winds up dead in the parking lot, and somebody starts shooting, it becomes clear that Maggie and Matthew have made themselves targets as well. Thrown together to escape Zane's assassins, Maggie begins to realize the three of them have something else in common—their animals have all claimed each other as mates. A ménage relationship would be complicated enough, but mixing wolves and cats? The threeway sex is so hot, she doesn't care that they're wolves. And Matthew can't believe he's finally with Logan. But when things go sideways and Logan has to step up and take control, he teaches Maggie why even a jaguar princess must obey her alpha, and teaches her that a good spanking can be oh, so good...
