“Kit and I are in love. We’re planning to be married. No date has been set yet. We’re flying to California so I can meet her family. Naturally, her father wants to give her away. Between both families, we’ll see what date works for everyone so arrangements for a church wedding can be made. We’re thinking about having a reception there, and another one here at the house.”

Kit hadn’t thought it possible, but she saw a transformation take place. Where there’d been pain, she saw joy.

“We wanted to claim you from the very start,” his mother exclaimed.

Cord’s father held out his arms. “Come here, Kit. Let me be the first one to welcome you to the McFarland family.”

A spirit of celebration permeated the study. Everyone hugged everyone. Cord wrapped Kit in his arms. “I told you our news would make a difference,” he whispered against her lips before kissing her long and hard without regard for who might be watching.

  “Whoa— Uncle Cord!”

  “Whoa is right,” Maggie declared.

  Katy giggled.
