Chapter 1 – Not in Kansas Anymore

How did I wind up in this position? Standing between two powerful women, magic energy

potential arcing between them. My Ella-Marie pulled the very power of the earth up into her and this other woman, pulled a crackling emerald energy which tasted different than any I've ever felt as a sensitive.

Random sparks from that same energy pinged in crystal tones as they showered me and my body, which defended against them by changing my skin in the spots it touched into a living organic crystal which was harder than diamond.

I had one hand on Ella-Marie's chest as she strode forward, pushing me toward this woman, causing furrows to form in the ground at my feet. She was hissing out in her cockney British accent, “You think ya got what it takes ya manky bint? Bring it. We're standin' right here.”

I could feel her gathering earth energy into her slowly crystalizing fist for one of her staggeringly powerful strikes which could easily bring down a charging bull elephant.

The other woman seemed unimpressed as she made a cage of her fingers then pulled them apart like she was pulling strings of that emerald magic out of thin air like ropes of taffy. The sheer heat from the concentrated power caused my clothing to start to smoke as my skin started taking on a translucent sheen to protect me from the heat. Holy shit!

I called out with my arms outstretched between them, “Ladies! Ladies, stop! Can't we talk?” In my head I was asking Marie, “She's not listening to me, can you make her settle down for a minute?”

The impression of a memory of an echo of a voice with a French accent, which made the core of my being shudder in desire, responded, “I am sorry, my Parker, Ella won't listen to me. She eez stubborn, non? She likes to hit first, ask questions later.”

Then the brunette closing in on us stopped moving forward, her sharp green eyes which were literally burning with emerald fire scanned as she hissed out a curse, her hands weaved in the air and pushed a shimmering wave of power toward us, “What witchery is this demons? Where is the third demon hiding? I can hear her! Don't try to hide from me.”

I felt a shiver as that wave passed us by and then the woman's eyes widened as my feet finally found a rock beneath my feet to brace against to stop Ella's advance. I watched as the woman started turning and looking all around.

Had she... had she just heard Marie? Only Ella and I could.

Marie had the same thought and asked, “Mon cher? Can you hear me? We are not your enemy.

We can talk this out, non?”

The woman was spinning around, her power seemed to double as she kept one hand, now glowing with a ball of crackling energy toward Ella and me. “I hear you demon, show yourself! Face me!

  Face Dorothy of Oz!”

Dorothy of... oh my god! She had said Oz before, but I wasn't sure I had heard her right. I stared at the woman who was so frighteningly powerful that she seemed to have even the forces of nature at her command. This was demonstrated by the fact she had been delivered to us on the hilltop by an honest to God tornado.

One moment Snow was leading our group of Avatars through the path between worlds to her garden, Perchta's Garden, which was walled off from the eyes of the Elders who were threatening to come to the mortal realm on earth to destroy it and start over, the next we were in this bright and colorful land.

Our group of Avatars had to hide away so that the balance between good and evil in the mortal realm wasn't as one-sided as it was when we were there. Hopefully, it would be enough to keep the Elders' attention off of Earth while we hid away.

Ella-Marie and I had been walking the path with the others until... my eyes went wide at the realization that we were with them until Ella-Marie said, “I don't think we're in Kansas anymore.” Had that being spoken on the path caused us to diverge from the others and come to this place, to Oz, because it had been on our minds at the time?

We had heard the battle, which was still raging below when the burst of magic that deposited us here caught... Dorothy's attention.

Now I'm apparently the only voice of reason standing between two juggernauts who were aching for a fight. I tried again, “Umm... Dorothy that is Marie, she is a part of Ella here. We are not your enemy.”

Her eyes snapped to Ella, who looked to be in that euphoric state she got in when she was ready for a good brawl. Dorothy's emerald eyes flared with green flame, then widened like she could see something we could not.

She placed her hands in front of her, back to back, then grasped the very air like she was opening a couple sliding doors and tore them apart. Then to all of our shock and amazement, Marie tumbled out of Ella.

I looked at her and the slight brunette standing where they had been a moment before. I recognized her face. It was the real face of Ella, from the drawing of her in Ella-Marie's pocket. Dorothy had separated them? After all these centuries? And she had done it like it were as simple as breathing. Not even Perchta could do that!

Dorothy growled out, “I will not allow you to surprise me in an ambush by hiding within the other.”

I moved quickly to Marie who just sat on the ground, staring at her hands in the profound emotional shock of seeing her hands again, not as a passenger in her own form.

That was my mistake, moving from between the two combatants.

Ella's face twisted from the excitement and joyful anticipation of a fight to full of rage. She yelled out in panic, losing most of the Cockney accent she prefers, “Marie!” Then quickly snapped out in a voice higher in tone and pitch than I was used to, it sounded like a teenaged girl was yelling out to me,

  “Parker, get her back!”

She roared in challenge, and Dorothy's eyes twinkled in a madness I have only seen in our little Briar Rose. I swallowed, knowing she had left her sanity behind long ago as the two titans dove at each other, swinging. I threw myself over Marie as their fists impacted each other.

Being a magic sensitive, I perceive these sorts of battles differently than the casual observer, as I can feel and see the energies that ebb and flow through the world, sense magic in all its forms. But even so, I've felt nothing like what happened next.

It was like the world slowed down as two different magics compressed against each other, the power of the earth from my Ella, and the power of the elements and nature around us from Dorothy. It felt like we were all being tugged toward the compression of energies like it had a gravity of its own.

Even all the raging sounds of battle were sucked in and swallowed into the deafening silence of it all.

Then after a long pause, which was only the tiniest fraction of a second, the energies canceled each other out in a release of raw force.
The top of the hill we were standing on shattered, all the sound returning in a torrent that made my ears feel as if they were being impacted by a thousand great hammers upon an anvil.

Marie held a hand forward for my protection, and I watched that destructive power, which was exploding from their impact, flare around a small shield she was able to conjure before us. Of the three of us, only Marie had any proficiency with magic casting, and she gasped with the effort.

I screamed as I anchored us to the undulating ground with all my strength while Ella and Dorothy went tumbling and skipping along the ground away from each other, like discarded toys.

Ella was the first to stagger to her feet and waver a moment as she shook her head as if to clear it.

Then she saw Dorothy rising to her own shaky feet fifty yards away. Even more of that emerald magic started cracking around her than before. It was pushing at the very fabric of the world, causing her feet to hover slightly above the ground as the loose pebbles and vegetation around her disintegrated where the power touched them.

I glanced at my Marie, who was still looking at her own hands in amazement, her eyes started to

water, then to our Ella growled and grinned as she wiped a thumb under her nose and clenched her fists. “Is that all you got, you wanker?” She started striding forward, each step sounding like crystal clanking and grinding on stone. She was using so much energy that she was crystalizing faster than normal.

She hesitated only a moment when Marie begged in a whisper, “Ella?” But it was such a profound look our love gave us, with her brow creased in worry. I knew that Ella would die for us without regret. This was so unnecessary if they'd both just listen to reason. We weren't Dorothy's enemy.

Were we? She didn't seem to be that sweet innocent farm girl from Kansas from the stories. What I have tasted so far had more evil in it than the black magic which had made the three of us what we are.

Dorothy growled back at her, “You and your army will not live to see the sunset, demon!”

Ella spread her arms wide, and hundreds of crystal shards shot away from her, toward Dorothy in a glittering torrent of deadly rain as our girl snapped back, “Worse than you have tried, witch! And we're...” Her bravado hesitated when she glanced at us then amended, “I. I'm still standin', now ain't I?”

It was so odd hearing her growl her challenge in that younger sounding and higher voice, and it sort of took most of the dangerous overtones out of the threat, and it sounded... dare I say it? Cute? God, Ella would kill me if I voiced that.

With a wave of an arm of the green-eyed woman, the air in front of her seemed to solidify into a translucent emerald wall. The crystal projectiles shattered against it, but the shield cracked and crumbled, falling to the ground. My eyes went wide when I realized that it had really been constructed of emeralds as I saw the jeweled shards littering the ground.

I yelled out to both of them, “Stop this before you hurt each other! Dorothy, we aren't demons!

  We aren't your enemy.”

It was like talking to a wall. They were both stubborn buffoons who were lost in the euphoria of bloodlust. Standing against perceived enemies that allowed them to finally unleash their fury without holding back.

Dorothy thrust both hands forward, and the earth and stones in front of her heaved up and shot toward Ella like a wave shattering the ground between them even more.

Ella was actually chuckling as I felt that very earth pulling up inside her and she leapt into the air, cocked a fist, and landed in a crouch with a mighty strike to the ground. With an enormous whump of energy released, the earth fractured as the ground shook and the fracture shattered the incoming wave, showering us all in dirt and pulverized stone.

Or love mocked the witch, “Earth? You attack me with earth? The earth is mine ya bint.” Then

our girl grabbed the air and pulled up with a grunt. A slab of stone tore up from the ground behind Dorothy and slammed down upon her, like book closing.

I almost screamed out for Ella to stop, but the slab shuddered then exploded, I pulled Marie behind me, and the shrapnel traveling the speed of bullets clinked off of me in crystal pings. That would have shredded her.

Dorothy pulled herself up on a knee, swayed, and staggered to her feet. Then she started weaving her hands in the air again. I could feel all the magic around us gathering into a crackling ball of power which was threatening to burn my brain from my skull because it was so dense and beyond my comprehension.

I blinked when I realized all I could hear was Ella's labored breathing and the crackling of magic during the fight. Marie must have realized it too because we had both turned to the battlefield below.

The fighting had all stopped, and all eyes were trained up the hill at us. They were all watching the two titans battling on a scale that dwarfed the skirmish below.

I squinted my eyes at some motion at the base of the hill as Dorothy said in a voice booming with power and that same madness our Rose had inside of her, “That is it demon, I am done playing with you now. It is time to send you back to the hell from whence you came.”

The figure below was approaching rapidly, and my eyes widened. It was a dog, even bigger than Daria in her wolf form. But it was no wolf nor werewolf, it looked to be a black dog spawned in hell like Illy's unicorn. Its ice blue eyes burning. And it was approaching in great bounding strides closing the distance like a runaway freight train. I could see the saliva on its three-inch fangs glistening in the overly bright sunlight. It had to have been five feet tall and at least ten feet long.

It was already upon us before I realized it, it had traveled a quarter mile in maybe fifteen seconds. I again moved Marie behind me, and I braced myself as my French love started chanting and weaving her hands, preparing a spell.

Then with a roaring snarl, the beast leapt at us – But my brow furrowed when it sailed over us and landed in front of Dorothy. And as the doglike creature's hind haunches landed, in a smooth, seamless manner that conserved the forward motion it seemed to stand, raising a front paw as the monstrous dog changed into a very ummm... a very naked woman with flowing blonde hair and curves in... wow...

Ella hesitated in her own charge in indecision and blinked. There was a naked woman on the field, and she didn't know what to do. So like us, she just watched in stunned silence.

The woman stepped right up to Dorthy, whose eyes widened and the magic she was gathering just vanished like a light switch had been flipped before the newcomer could be harmed by it. The blonde smiled sweetly as Dorothy asked, “Toto?” The woman placed her hand on Dorothy's cheek, and the

green-eyed sorceress closed her eyes and leaned into the touch with a profound look of peace and longing on her face which seemed to calm her. Her muscles visibly relaxing.

The woman said in a tender tone, “Dot, love. These aren't demons.”

Dorothy's eyes snapped open and flared with that emerald flame as she pulled the naked woman behind her. “Get back, Toto. They came from a dimensional tear just like the ones below, I felt it!”

Her power started to build, and the other woman placed a hand on her shoulder and said, “No, Dot, look at them. Look what they are wearing. They're from home. From Earth.”

The power dissipated again as Dorothy looked at first Ella then Marie and me in disbelief. That unnatural flame flickered and died in her eyes, leaving stunning green eyes in its wake. Then her brow furrowed as she really took us in as this Toto girl moved to her side. The woman who had a moment before been in a homicidal rage was now looking so vulnerable as she whispered to me, “Have you finally come to show us the way home?”

Marie said in her rich French accent, “We did not come here of our own accord. But we give our word we shall try. Might we parlay peace in this fight? We are on the same side, non?”

Dorothy, suddenly looked at a loss as she looked at the blonde, looking suddenly bashful like she'd do anything to please her. Oh good god, how sweet! She was head over heels for Toto. This was a magic u
ser possibly more powerful than Perchta, a Goddess, the picture of confidence in a fight, and she was – shy.

Toto looked from Dorothy's face to us and asked, “Are you with the demons?” We were all shaking our heads, and she asked, “Earth?”

I nodded, and she smiled in excitement. “What has transpired in the centuries since the Red Hood arrived in Seattle? Has the curse of the werewolves been defeated?”

I exchanged a look with Ella as Marie took my hand in hers and laced our fingers. “It hasn't even been two years since the Red Hood killed Slater near Seattle. Mankind is essentially free of the werewolf contagion now.”

Dorothy looked half mad as she whispered, “Two years?”

Toto, who seemed to have no modesty, standing there looking so bare and feminine draping herself on Dorothy's side, furrowed her brow and almost accused, “We've been trapped here in Oz for over two hundred years...”

Marie prompted as she hugged herself beside me, “Time must move differently here than the mortal realm, non?”

Ella had joined us, moving in front of us... always protecting us. She relaxed in a profound way when Marie reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder. I noted the retreating crystal sheen on

  most of her skin.

Our girl had been at her limit, any more grand expenditures of power and she would have fallen to the magical emerald energy powerhouse. I could see the crystallization of her skin receding more rapidly than normal. Was it something about Oz? It would have taken hours in the mortal realm.

Ella reached a hand up to place on top of Marie's.

Then Toto turned from us, she placed her forehead against the brunette's and said in a calming tone,

“Right now, our people need you.” That is when I realized that the battle below us had started up again, “The munchkin forces can't hold the line.”

Dorothy blushed and nodded almost cutely. Toto gave her a loving smile and captured her lips in a tender kiss, then nodded reinforcement. It was melting my heart to see how bashful the protector of Oz was around that gorgeous creature.
