Jaywalking

Emile bit his lip before he admitted, “Well, it’s about you.”
Jay’s eyes widened, and then a slow smile spread over his face until his dimple flashed. “Oh, yeah?” He hesitated, and then he slowly held the notebook toward Emile. “Then, maybe you should read it to me.”
Emile gave a tentative smile of his own. “I think I told you that I only read my poems to my dog.”
Jay laughed, making to pull the notebook back, but Emile reached for it before he could.
“I think I’d like to read this one to you, though.”
Jay’s laughter quieted and his smile turned gentle. “Thank you. I’d like that.”
Emile leaned against Jay’s leg as he opened the notebook over his bent knee. Strangely, he wasn’t nervous or self-conscious. He felt completely calm as he began to read, starting with the title.
“‘Inter-season’; or, a poem about how nothing is one thing, and how one person can be everything.”
