Dead in the Water

Mullen almost opened his eyes at this point. The conversation had taken a distinctly odd and intrusive turn.

  “I was briefly tempted,” the first one said. “But not for long.”

  Mullen felt a surge of indignation. “I can hear you,” he wanted to say. “It’s me you’re talking about. Me, lying here on the bed between you, while you gossip about me and tell each other how you’ve tested me and found me wanting!”

  “So you’re not interested in him then?”

  “I didn’t say that. Actually I do find him rather intriguing.”

  There was a silence. Even Mullen in his dumb state could sense the tension between the two women.

  “I really like him,” the other one said. That had to be Rose.

  “May the best woman win,” came the reply.

  There was another pause. Then they both burst into laughter.

  One of them bent low and kissed him on the forehead. Then the other. After that they retreated out of the room, still giggling together. Mullen opened his eyes and searched for his bell. He rang it. Hopefully the nurse would give him some sympathy. He needed it. He wondered if she would be the navy blue woman of his dreams.
