“Nothing,” Jonathan said, forcing his signature cocky smile.
Josh furrowed his brow as he straightened and folded his arms. Jonathan could tell his brother didn’t believe him, but he didn’t push it. Josh glanced around. “Where’s Jordan?”
Grateful for a question he could actually answer, he motioned toward the back of the house. “Mom took him outside. Said something about a water balloon fight.” Jonathan shrugged.
Josh cleared his throat and stood, stretching in an exaggerated movement. He straightened and walked over to Jonathan, clapping him on the shoulder. “Don’t discount love so fast, little brother. You never know who’s waiting just around the corner.” He gave Jonathan a wink.
Jonathan shook his head. “Yeah, I don’t think so. One, I’m way too busy, and two? Who would I date?”
Josh gave him a knowing smile. “Trust me, fate is funny like that. Just when you think you’ve thrown in the towel on love, people start popping up around you.” He rubbed his hand through his hair as he made his way over to the kitchen. “She’s just around the corner. ‘Cause if it can happen to me, it’ll happen to you.”
Before Jonathan could retort, Josh was gone.
Now alone, Jonathan returned to the distraction of his phone. He glared at the screen as Josh’s words raced through his mind.
What did Josh know anyway? He’d found the perfect girl for him. In Jonathan’s world, women like that didn’t exist. They either wanted him for his money or his status. It was hard to find a girl who just liked him for him.
His heart squeezed at the thought of finding someone who had the qualities he was looking for. It shouldn’t be hard, but with his luck, it felt near impossible.
He shook his head. Just because one Braxton brother found love, didn’t mean it was in the cards for him. He was happy for his brother, but he needed to manage his expectations for himself. If he didn’t get his hopes up then he couldn’t get hurt. And, right now, protecting himself was all that mattered.
Love wasn’t going to happen for him. Period.
