Their reaction is nearly instantaneous. Beams of light streak from outreached arms. I bank sharply, the beams passing the chopper by scant feet. Slowing quickly and pressing the rudders to bring the nose around, I fire. There are a few heavy caliber rounds remaining from the fight with those flying bugs. The ground is pummeled under the impacting rounds, wet dirt and stone flying into the air. The Overseers are momentarily lost in giant splashes of mud and rock.
Glancing quickly to see if BT is still with us, I see him hanging onto the strut with both arms and only one leg. However, there isn’t time to allow him to get repositioned. Lowering the nose, I aim straight for the giant portal. I have no idea what lies on the other side or whether we’ll be able to go through it. For some reason, the structure below allowed us to enter with Trip, so I’m hoping the same holds true here.
The snapping and crackling portal fills the windscreen, the streamers of silver flowing across the black space to vanish in the center, like the iris of an eye feeding into a pupil. The instruments go crazy, the compass spinning in rapid circles. The edges of the rotor pass through the portal as if it wasn’t there. The high-pitched keening turns into a roar. The sunshine vanishes instantly, and we enter into a realm of deep darkness. All goes silent.

Mark Tufo was born in Boston Massachusetts. He attended UMASS Amherst where he obtained a BA and later joined the US Marine Corp. He was stationed in Parris Island SC, Twenty Nine Palms CA and Kaneohe Bay Hawaii. After his tour he went into the Human Resources field with a worldwide financial institution and has gone back to college at CTU to complete his masters.

John O'Brien is a former Air Force fighter instructor pilot who transitioned to Special Operations for the latter part of his career gathering his campaign ribbon for Desert Storm.
