About a minute later he reemerged. Only this time he wasn’t alone. Bolton Crutchfield was with him. As Ernie left again, apparently releasing the other prisoners, Crutchfield got into the uniform of the guard who had tried to go for his gun. As he changed, he spoke. Jessie could see other prisoners milling about in the background, listening intently to what he was saying.
Then Bolton Crutchfield turned and faced the very camera they were watching him on. He smiled up at them and waved. Then he turned and focused his attention on the first guard whose throat had been slit and who was still sitting slumped over in his chair.
Jessie couldn’t see what he was doing. But after about thirty seconds, he turned back around and faced the camera. He was holding something. As he approached the camera, he held it up.
It was a clipboard with a single white sheet of paper attached. On it, he had written something. As he brought it closer, Jessie realized that he had written the message in the blood of the guard, using his index finger as the pen.
He held up the paper right in front of the camera so that the words were clearly visible, though they dripped slightly.
Jessie looked at it, unable to stop the suddenly bubbling cauldron of fear from twisting her insides into knots. She extended her arms to brace herself on the desk, afraid that she might topple over without assistance. Ryan gripped her shoulders in support as she looked over at Kat, whose face mirrored the horror she felt.
The message read:
Be seeing you, Miss Jessie.
After holding the sign up for what felt like an eternity, Bolton Crutchfield dropped the clipboard to floor, gave them one last, chilling smile, and disappeared from sight.
