“I’ve only been gone one night, and you already miss me?” Valeria answered grinning down at the communicator even though she knew the phoenix couldn’t see her.

“Shut up, princess this isn’t about that,” The harsh voice spoke, and Valeria’s smile fell.

“What’s wrong?” She asked, worried that something had happened to them at the Academy. She prayed to the Creator that there wasn’t another attack.

“Edie had another vision. Kamilah is going to the GSI building in Kalissa.”

  Chapter Sixteen

What are communicators good for anyway?

Valeria hung up the communicator quickly and tried to call her parents, but there was no answer. She looked back down at the note and slapped herself in the forehead. The towers are down in that area, they wouldn’t receive her call until they were in the range of another tower.

“I need to call Emalia,” Valeria exclaimed, tossing the piece of parchment back down before dialing her sister’s BID into her communicator.

This is Healer Emalia Grey’s communicator. Please leave me a message-

Valeria groaned and hung up before dialing Callan. When she received no answer, she tried her Uncle Xander but to no avail. No one was answering their communicator, the panic was rising in her throat, and the vampire didn’t have anyone else she could contact that could do anything about this. There was only one other beast that she could think of that might be able to help. The only issue with this beast was that Valeria wasn’t sure if they would even do anything about the present situation.

“Slither!” Valeria exclaimed, running down the stairs and calling again. Her slither was a sorcerer, she could help her get ahold of her mother, “Slither! Please come out, I need your help.”

“What do you want, fledgling?” The sorcerer answered from behind her, she was leaning against the doorway with her arms crossed, “I’m not Blue, I don’t entertain.”

Valeria took a moment to take in her slither, she had buzzed white hair that reminded her of freshly fallen snow and a blank expression that sent a shiver down her spine, “I need to talk to my mother. You are her spy or slither or whatever. Can you get ahold of her?”

“No. The towers are down where the Princess is. I’m pretty sure she told you that in her note,” The sorcerer responded, “Why? What do you need?”

Valeria groaned in frustration, her next best option was Emalia, but she wasn’t answering either. If the slither was a high enough caster, then she had a way of getting her to her sister, which would be even better, “You are a sorcerer, right?”

“Oh, no. Did my purple eyes give me away?” The sorcerer asked sarcastically, and Valeria groaned in frustration. Why did everyone in her life have to be so sassy? Her mother, Demetri, Callan and now her slither.

“What level Caster are you? Can you make a portal to Kalissa?” Valeria questioned, trying not to get distracted. She couldn’t risk more people getting hurt on her watch. Valeria wouldn’t remain silent while she knew vital information anymore. She learned her lesson, and she’d be damned by the Destroyer if she would repeat it. If this sorcerer was at least a level seven caster then, she could get them to Kalissa in a few seconds.

“Why?” The slither questioned looking at her with narrowed eyes that reminded Valeria of a snake’s, cold and calculating.

“Please, whatever your name is, I need your help. People’s lives are at risk,” Valeria pleaded, grabbing the other woman’s hands in hers, “It has to do with the Demon King. I think one of his minions are on their way to the GSI in Kalissa.”

“Did your elf friend have another vision?” She asked, and Valeria wasn’t even surprised that the other beast knew about that and nodded.

“Yes, now will you help me?” The sorcerer stared at her for a long moment, her indigo eyes analyzing Valeria’s face before she finally spoke.

“Where do you need to go, fledgling?” Snow questions and Valeria sighed in relief and released the female. The desperation from before ebbing away just a little bit.

“GSI, the one in Kalissa,” She answered hoping that this sorcerer was powerful enough to get them that far.

“No can do on the GSI, fledgling. The GSI has a protective barrier keeping all uncleared portals and magical impulses out and even if I took you right in front of the building, you don’t have clearance to get into it,” The sorcerer she’d taken to calling Snow in her head explained crossing her arms her face taking on a more serious expression.

“Damn it, how about going directly to Emalia’s apartment? It’s close to the GSI building, and she has access to it,” Snow looked at her with pursed lips before nodding. Valeria could only pray that she and Callan were at home.

“I can get you on the balcony but not inside the apartment. There are too many wards because your mom is the most paranoid beast on the planet,” Snow answered an almost admiring look on the sorcerer’s face. Valeria took a second to wonder, where did her mom get these beasts?

“That’ll have to work,” Valeria nodded, her pulse had skyrocketed she was sure. If this didn’t work, then she didn’t know what she was going to do. They could take a carriage, but it would take too long. Whatever Kamilah was planning would already happen. She couldn’t be too late, not again.

“Okay, stand back,” She urged, and Valeria hurriedly took a few steps backward. Snow waved her hands causing purple energy to form around her fingers and project into what was a small spinning circle before growing larger and larger until it was big enough for both of them to step through, “I can only hold it open for so long. Let’s go, fledgling. Watch your footing.”

“Okay,” Valeria nodded suppressing a glare before following the slither through the portal. Going through personal portals were so much more unsettling than going through the standard ones. Valeria’s stomach lurched, and she stumbled slightly but was caught by Snow before she could fall onto the ground. If she never went through another personal portal ever again, it would still be too soon.

“Easy there, fledgling,” Snow said, gripping her elbow, “First time is always the worst when going through personal portals. You’ll get it eventually.”

“Yeah, yeah. I’m okay,” Valeria murmured, shaking her head to clear it. Looking around, she could see that they were indeed on the balcony of her sister’s apartment, “We need to get going. We don’t have time for this.”

“What are you doing here? What’s wrong?” Valeria turned to see Mamoru emerge from behind them. She hadn’t even heard the wolf walk towards them. The head slither looked exactly as she remembered.

“I need to speak with Emalia and Callan,” Valeria answered impatiently, “It is crucial that I speak to them.”

“How important? What is going on?” Mamoru questioned his eyes trailing up and down her figure with the same analytical consternation Snow had used. Annoyance flared into her gut as she was once again being treated like a fledgling.

“Kamilah, my RA at the Grey Academy or my ex-RA at the Grey Academy-”

“Cut to the chase, fledgling,” Snow interrupted earning her a stern look from Mamoru and Valeria remembered how all the other slithers had looked to him during the explosion.

“Kamilah is working for the Demon King and is going to the GSI, and I need to stop her,” Valeria blurted out, “Now move. I will not let more people die because of me.”

“How do you even know this? If she is going to the GSI, isn’t that a good thing?” Mamoru asked, crossing his arms in the same way that Snow had a few minutes prior, “The GSI have agents that can handle it, why do you need to go there? With all due respect Duchess, you are just a fledgling.”

“My friend, Edith, had a vision and Callan is a member of the Golden Six. He was marked to stop demons. The GSI has trained agents, but they are no match for the Demon King, even I know that” Valeria argued pushing down her annoyance at being called a fledgling again, “This might be their only shot at catching the Demon King.”

  “Go ahea
d,” Mamoru nodded towards the doors his eyes downcast as he gazed at the door, “But be warned that you will be interrupting an important moment for your sister and her mate.”

“Thank you,” Valeria said, ignoring the wolf’s words and barging through the glass doors of her sister’s apartment to see Emalia on one knee with a ring in her hand in front of Callan. Their table had quite the spread with blue moon roses placed in the center. They both looked over at her and Callan glared. If the situation weren’t so dire, Valeria would have turned around and left if only to be spared by the wrath of the older wolf.

“No! Get out,” Callan exclaimed looking wildly at her, “She is finally proposing to me after all these cycles, and you choose now to barge in here. Aren’t you grounded, V?”

“Why didn’t you answer your communicators?” She demanded, glancing between the two of them.

“Why are you here, V? What’s wrong?” Emalia replied, not answering her question.

“Kamilah is working for the Demon King, and she is going to the GSI,” Valeria exclaimed wishing they could skip the part where she explained everything and went after Kamilah before it was too late.

“Typical,” Callan grouched before helping Emalia to her feet and taking the ring from her hand then slid it onto his finger, “I’m not giving this back though. You basically proposed. Demon King or not, I ain’t giving it back.”

“I wasn’t going to take it back,” Emalia said stroking the other wolf’s cheek before turning to Valeria with an equally annoyed expression, “What’s this about the Demon King?”

“Edith saw our ex-RA, Kamilah going to the GSI.”

  “So what if your RA-”

“Ex-RA,” Valeria interrupted Callan with a glare, “She skipped out on her screening and gave Mia’s journal to some hooded figure-”

“Whose Mia?” Emalia asked her brows scrunching in confusion. Valeria groaned in frustration, they didn’t have time for this.

“Ziana’s old partner at the Grey Academy, anyway none of that matters. Can you just trust me when I say something bad is going to happen if we don’t go to the GSI right now?”

The room was silent as the irritation left the two Wolves faces and they looked at each other as if having an entire conversation before Emalia spoke again, “Of course, V. Let’s get going.”

“Woah, woah, woah! You are two are not coming,” Callan said, looking between Emalia and Valeria, “The two of you are not trained fighters and if this gets bad...”

Before Valeria could get tell him to go drown himself, Emalia interjected, “I know you’re only saying this because you are worried, but you can’t go on your own. Mom and Uncle Xander are unreachable right now, you’re going to need help with the systems.”

“What if he is there, Emalia?” Callan asked, and Valeria realized that the wolf was afraid.

“This is about Kamilah, not him. We only know that one of his servants are going to be there, not him,” She said looking determinedly at him, “And if he is there, you know there is no way he would be able to recognize me.”

There was a long pause as the two of them stared at each other before he finally answered.

“I’m not putting you in danger especially not after finally getting you to make an honest wolf outta me,” Callan argued, but the fight seemed to drain out of him as her sister touched his arm. Out of the corner of her eyes, she could see Mamoru with his eyes glued to the floor.

“Alright, let’s get going,” Valeria said, clapping her hands together.

“V-” Callan began, and she knew he would demand she stay behind, but she held up a hand stopping him in his tracks.

“If you leave me here, I’ll just follow you. So you either take me with you now or deal with me showing up at a possibly bad time later.”

Callan growled in frustration, giving the two of them an exasperated look, “You two are just like Florence, and if you, V get killed I’ll bring you back to life, and I say I told you so. Understood?”

“Yes, Lieutenant, I understand,” She replied with a mock salute earning another irritated glare from the older wolf.

“Okay, Mamoru and..” Emalia trailed off looking to Snow with a questioning look.

“I don’t know her name, but I’ve been calling her Snow in my head,” Callan let out an amused laugh as Snow shrugged and turned to Mamoru with a triumphant grin.

“At least it’s better than Bunnywolf.”

“Quiet,” Mamoru growled without much bite to it.

“Alright, let’s go get this demon and send it back to its maker,” Callan said with a smirk and turned to Snow, “Think you have enough juice to get us to the building?”

Arriving at the GSI building Emalia turned to the two slithers before they went inside, “Snow, please go find Xander, if the Demon King is at the GSI building then we need his assistance.”

“I can not enter the Forest of Light, Dutchess,” Snow responded, “Besides we are wasting time trying to find them. By the time I get there, everything could have already gone sideways.”

“He won’t be there. Xander is scheduled for a meeting of the captains today in the Kalissa City Hall,” Mamoru interjected, and Valeria realized why Xander was not answering her call, the Kalissa City Hall was right by the tower that was down, “Besides if everything goes to shit, you will be able to help Captain Brantley out of it. I will stay with them.”

“No, Mamoru, you need to go find my mom, her communicator may not be getting a signal, but you can always run into the office. You know where the buildings are right?” Emalia grabbed the wolf’s hand, her eyes pleading, “She can handle this better than anyone, and you know it.”

“The office is across the city,” Mamoru protested, gripping her hand tightly. Valeria looked between the two of them in confusion. What is going on here? She turned to ask Callan, but he was gazing down at his new engagement ring completely unbothered by the exchange. She made a mental note to ask her sister what was up between her and her slither when there wasn’t a crazy phoenix on the loose.

“It will only take you a couple minutes to get there.”

“A lot can happen in a couple of minutes, Em or should I remind you what happened last time I went to get help,” The male slither countered, Snow had taken off sometime between talking to Mamoru and the intense stares of their companions.

“Just go get my mother,” Emalia urged, finally breaking the contact, “like you said everything goes to shit, you and my mother will be able to help us out of it.”

“Fine,” Mamoru replied his jaw tight as he turned swiftly on his heel and seemingly disappeared among the buildings.

“Can we go yet?” Callan asked impatiently.

“Yes,” Emalia replied, letting out a frustrated sigh before leading the way inside the GSI. The building was surprisingly empty as they made their way to the A team floor.

  “Where is everyone?” Valeria questioned.

“Either on assignment or at home. It is supposed to be a free night. We get two nights off every six nights. Only a handful of agents would be here right now,” Callan responded, typing on his communicator, “I sent messages to Fang and Xander, but they won’t get it until they get into range of another tower. I can’t contact the other agents because all my contacts were lost with my last communicator. Luckily I can send an alert through the GSI communication which will make sure they get the notification.”

“But I thought their communicators do not have a signal? How could they receive the message?” Valeria questioned, thinking about her mother.

“It’s a magical override installed into the system for emergencies to ensure that in situations like these they will still get the notification. It will send out a magic impulse, so they get the message tower or not,” Emalia answered, “It is used in emergencies only because it overrides all communicator settings to send through the alert. The issue with this is that it will shut down the entire building once the command is issued.”

“That is helpful,” Valeria murmured, if they could send out notifications to her mother or all of Team A then they would be able to contain Kamilah no problem and would have a better chance if the Demon King showed up. The doors to the lift slid open and whatever Valeria was expecting, wasn’t there. Just an empty hallway. Nothing seemed out of place besides the lack of agents.

“Like I said night off,” Callan mused as he led them to the control room which was under Xander’s office and he moved to the projected screen, already starting to tap at it. The room had dark walls lined with illuminated displays, each project a different thing. It was a large room for just holding a couple monitors. Valeria moved over to the screen, projecting the front lobby, “Oh by the Destroyers Domain.”

“What?” Valeria questioned, moving away from the camera to stand beside her brother in law or soon to be brother in law.

“The entire damn system is down,” Callan exclaimed beating a hand into the desk, “Someone tampered with it and now the whole system isn’t responding to my codes.”

Valeria looked over his shoulder from behind him as he tried to reboot the system and prayed to the Creator that they would be able to get the communicators back up and running. The screen projected a red screen reading ‘This action cannot be carried out at this time’ every time he even touched the projected screen, and Callan growled in irritation.

“This thing is so useless,” Callan muttered, hitting the illuminated keyboard angrily, “Where is Will when you need him?”

“The information log says he has not clocked out today,” Emalia supplied from her spot behind them, there was a screen right beside the entryway that served as a clock-in/clock-out station for the team members, her sister was peering up at it worriedly, “Do you think he is okay?”
