  “Yes, dear,” Derik hummed in response.

  “Do you think I am a bad person for killing Neferna?”

  “No,” Her father answered immediately, his tone sharp, “You did nothing wrong. It was self-defense. She would have killed you.”

  Valeria hummed, but she couldn’t stop thinking about it. Would she have? Neferna was not there for her, the halfling had said so herself and even spared Emalia. She didn’t bother voicing this thought to her father, she knew what he would say that it wasn’t her fault. A part of her knew that, but a small voice in the back of her head told her otherwise. As she thought back that everything that happened to her over this phase, she came to a conclusion. Valeria was no longer going to be the victim, the one someone had to save. No, she was going to be the person who saved others. She was going to become a member of the GSI, and she was going to make her parents proud, make their sacrifices worth it. Show them that they didn’t suffer for nothing. She was going to become the vampire that saved herself. With that thought, Valeria closed her eyes for the last time as a fledgling.
