[Willow Harbor 08.0] Raven's Sight
Page 15
Heat built in my veins. I hated that tree. It gave everyone their happy endings but me.
I wiped my eyes and quickly dressed. When I left my apartment, I was determined to make the tree pay. With every step closer to it my anger flamed brighter. I had a list of hateful words ready to spew at it once I passed through its spindly branches. However, once I reached the tree my words disappeared. All that was left inside of me were my emotions. My legs gave out beneath me from their weight, and I reached for the tree to steady myself as tears flowed freely from my eyes.
“How could you do this to me?” I sobbed to the tree. “How could you take him from me? I loved him.”
A gentle breeze blew and in the wind, I caught the faint scent of Thane.
“I don’t think it wants you to water it with your salty tears.”
My breath hitched at the sound of the familiar voice. Had I imagined it? Was the tree screwing with me? I shifted around to glance behind me. Thane stood a few feet away. His hands were crammed into the front pockets of his dark jeans, and a shy smile pulled at the corners of his lips.
I bolted to him.
My arms wrapped around his neck as I buried my face into his chest. He was solid and best of all...he was warm.
“How?” The question caught in my throat, causing it to sound strangled.
“I have no clue, but I think it has something to do with this tree.” He glanced up at it. “I’ve got a feeling it only wants happy endings.”
Another soft breeze blew, sending the old willow’s branches sweeping over us as though it was affirming Thane’s words. The tree had brought him back to me. It had wanted my—our—happy ending too. I could feel it.
“So, you’re here, as in, to stay?” I asked once I finally released my death grip on him.
“Didn’t you read my letter?”
“Well, yeah.”
“Then you should know I’m never leaving your side again.” He wrapped me in his arms and kissed the top of my head. “I’m yours for life, little raven.”
A smile twisted my lips as warmth bloomed through my veins.
“Good, wise owl, because I wasn’t about to let you go.”
He dipped his head and kissed me softly. Another cool breeze ruffled the thin branches of the willow tree, and I whispered silent apologies to it swearing I’d live every day with Thane as though it were my last, and I’d never question its magic again.
