Together, with the shell of a girl I once knew in the arms of a man that never knew how to love her, I walked up the hill and away from the tree. At the top I turned, compelled to look back, as though I’d left something behind. I knew it was only Sam. In my mind, I could see her, standing simply in the shade of a tree that was no longer there, the sound of a tinkling creek behind her. She was watching us and waving good-bye, the smile on her face unlike anything I’d seen before.
I stopped, fighting back tears. “Ladybird, ladybird . . .” I whispered under my breath. “Fly away home . . .”
She was happy.
