Cory's Shift

Cory filled him in. Black grinned. “You really adapted.”
“I tried. But I got to be honest, if the antidote would have worked, I think I would’ve ended up running.”
“Sometimes bailing out is the best option.”
“I’m glad I didn’t. You should’ve seen Ava. It looks like she’s back to her old self.”
“That’s good.”
“I still can’t believe it all worked out.”
“You could’ve been killed, you know.”
“I still haven’t processed it.”
“You talk to the cops yet?”
“No, my doctor wouldn’t let them today.”
“Don’t give them too much. They kidnapped you, just like they did with your kids.”
“But they got Chen and others who’ll say I was there in Texas.”
“You went there to try and get some info on what they were doing. They got wise and grabbed you and put you with the others. They were armed, right?”
“Oh yeah.”
“With all the media attention on you, I doubt they’ll charge you with anything, but if they do, it’ll be self-defense.”

Cory came out of the studio smiling. Linda said, “Good call?”
“That was the national registry for organ donors. Guess what they said.”
“There’s been an increase in people signing up?”
“How about a five hundred percent jump. They said they had never seen anything like it.”
“That’s fantastic.”
“And they said it’s not slowing down.”
“All the publicity really helped then.”
“Yeah, I never understood why the government never pushed people to sign up like they do in other countries.”
“We don’t like being told what to do.”
“I know, but you’re helping someone in need, and you’re going to be dead anyway.”
“We don’t like talking about death. We’re going to live forever, right?”
“Maybe one day. You know, I was thinking of doing a press conference, possibly with the girl who got a section of my liver. It’s not for everybody, but giving up a slice of my liver really wasn’t that bad.”
“It might help convince people to consider donating.”
“That’s what I’m thinking.”
Linda reached for her phone. “It’s Ava.”
Linda answered, speaking for a minute. She hung up smiling. “She’s staying out late, again.”
“Thank God, she’s back to normal.”
“Thank God and you, Cory. You’re the one who saved her.”
