Zones of Alacria- The Dragon Gate

“All clear,” Mikael said somberly. “That’s one powerful mage light.”

“Well, it was more than just the light, but yes. It would have taken down the shield and probably fed back into Damir,” Allion replied. “I need to tell King Faelyn everything I’ve found out.”

“That you do,” Mikael retorted. “You’ll also need to tell Orianna everything once she’s back. Same with our guild leadership. I, for one, am going get a head start and sit in on that conversation you’re going to have with the King.”

“As am I,” declared Kira, glowering at Allion.

“They’re breaking,” King Faelyn shouted. “Drive them out.”

The groups of fighters started chasing the few Dragon Hunters that were left. All of them were now trying to flee, as they’d finally realized they were outnumbered. The ones who weren’t engaged in combat suddenly vanished, porting to their guildhall to escape. Within a few minutes, they’d managed to catch up to each of the stragglers and send them back to join their friends.

Finally, they all regrouped in the center to tend to the wounded. Thankfully, Arik was still the only casualty of the day, but Aliz would be very busy for a while, creating more HP potions to replenish their stock.

“That was too close,” Damir said wearily. “Once Orianna is back, I need to teach her how we can combine our skills to make this barrier stronger. We nearly didn’t survive this time. I don’t know what’s changed, but they’re a lot stronger than they used to be.”

“I think Allion can answer that,” Mikael announced to the gathered group.

“Tonight is not the time for that,” declared King Faelyn. “Tonight is about Arik. We will celebrate his life and all he brought to us, and send his spirit on to rest with the dragons. Tomorrow, we will talk about our defenses. We won, if barely, which means our enemy is currently weak as well.”

Everyone nodded as Kira tried to hold back her tears.

“As soon as Orianna is back, I have some things to discuss with her. Having your guild portal here gave us a larger benefit than I realized,” the King said to Mikael and the others. “It’s time we combine our forces in a more effective way and let everyone play the role they were meant to play in this life. I plan on asking her to join my council. You named me wise for a reason, and I think it is time I showed you all that you named me correctly.”

“That’s it!” screamed Andrew. “I’m done playing nice. Joe! Colt! My office, now. Bring the rest of the guild leadership. We need to work out how to take her down immediately.”

He stormed up to his office, heading to his private Alchemy lab and Tinkerer’s workshop behind one of the secret doors.

“It’s time to make her pay,” he muttered.

He had no idea if she’d had a second Phoenix potion on her or not. Hopefully not, because then life would be much easier, as she’d be dead by now. Hope, however, was just a four-letter word as far as he was concerned. Until he had proof, he needed to flesh out his plans to stop her.

This was his world and it was going to stay that way, regardless of what some insolent little aberth thought. Orianna was now at the top of his list. He’d never failed to take care of those who went against him before and he wouldn’t be changing that now.

He’d been brought up to be in charge. He knew the rules of war and he knew how to exploit the enemy. This was war and she was going down.

The only question was what she would come back with, courtesy of that interfering dragon. Shen Long had refused him what was rightfully his. It was the only reason he hadn’t gotten his Mark yet, but that would change soon.

He was really close to completing his artifact, all he needed was some more life force energy. In fact, if he had the leaders round up everyone in the guild tonight and he forced them to kill each other a few times in the arena, he might get it finished in the next few weeks, even with only five of them counting toward the artifact each day. After that, the world was his again. He wouldn’t be stuck in this pathetic starter zone any longer.

He’d been promised immortality. What was that stupid phrase they’d used? Oh yes, may you be forever remembered. Well, they were definitely going to be remembering him. He’d make sure of that.

  Dedication

This book is dedicated to my wonderful husband, Steve, who believed in me and encouraged me to keep going when I was desperately trying to learn how to write fiction. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. It means everything to me.

Damir, I don’t think I could have done this without your editing skills, input and confidence boosting talks. Thank you so much for being such a great friend and editor.

Augustus Blackmer, Anneliese Rennie and Ezben Gerardo, thank you so much for being awesome beta readers. I’m so grateful for the time and effort you put into this. Your feedback and eagle eyes really helped make this book the best it could be.

Thank you as well to my parents for all your help and support, and for reading me so many books as a child.

To everyone who reads this book, I appreciate you more than I can express. Without you, there would be no way for me to do this. As long as you’re reading, I’ll keep writing.

I think video games give us all a chance to try out things we can’t or wouldn’t do in normal life, letting us live multiple lives at a time. I hope one day we get to experience fully immersive virtual reality because I think it will lead to some very interesting questions about how we define this game of life and what makes us human.

  Other Books in the Series

Zones of Alacria: The Dragon Hunters

Magic is being eliminated. He has one last move; save the game or die trying…

30 years before Orianna’s birth, the lottery that populates the Zones of Alacria with unwilling residents was created.

Lord Andrew Hoetford, a power-hungry noble who will stop at nothing in his bid to dominate, is selected in the very first lottery. Determined to become the controlling power in the first zone, he decides that eliminating magic from the world will ensure no one can stand in his way.

Can Jace Hagan (the lead game developer) and Shen Long stop Andrew from ruining their creation? Will Jace’s attempts to save magic end up tearing a hole in the world that even the mighty Shen Long will struggle to mend?

Discover what lies behind the Dragon Gate. See for yourself what really happened between Andrew and the elves, why the NPCs think dragons are a myth and how the first riddle came into existence.

Zones of Alacria: The Dragon Hunters is the prequel to the Experimental Alchemist epic fantasy LitRPG series, which contains magic, dragons and hints to Easter eggs in book 1. If you like game mechanics and intense combat (without harems or swearing), then you’ll love KR Dimmick’s eye opening prequel.
