CODA
102 years later. Commonwealth of Dhai Nora, Southern Aaldia
Roh woke to a warm, amber wash of summer light, and a steady, thrumming pain in his chest. He opened his eyes, the lids still gummy with sleep, and stared at the twisted living beams of the ceiling. He listened to the stirring of the house as his family woke. He lay alone in bed; he and his still living spouses had retired from the great sleeping quarters in the level above to this smaller chamber many years ago. Fewer stairs to navigate. Smaller beds. He preferred the intimacy. He reached over to the place beside him, but the sheets were cool.
“You’ll be late, Roh,” Luna said.
Luna came in through the open doorway, carrying clean clothes. Ze stacked them on the bed and clucked hir tongue. Hir thick white hair was shorn short in a somber, conservative style that Roh hadn’t worn since his time in the temples. Roh eased himself up. Every bone ached; the old pain in his knees flared, and he grunted as he placed his feet on the floor. He undressed with still nimble fingers, discarding the old clothes and tucking on the new; all white, the color of remembrance.
