Love Battle

“Well, not any longer. This single Guardian has been a Guardian for as long as I can remember. But back in the day, eons ago, it was not at all unusual to have a team. This Guardian is different though. The way the Titans of Terror were beaten was unique. They were eliminated from the competition forever.”
“Really?”
Val nodded. “The Guardian can also act as a judge. The Guardian judged the entire Titans of Terror Planet as unfitting.”
“They were turned into toe jam?” I asked.
Val laughed. “No, of course not!”
“Phew.”
“The Guardian reverted them to their primordial form so they could all re-evolve. It was quite impressive.”
I gulped. “Do you think the Guardian will do that to us? And the humans?”
Val laughed. “Nah, if the Guardian didn’t do it the Amazons, you guys should be safe.”
Walking outside, I discovered that the sun was shining and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Up above, I saw all the other teams watching from floating platforms. Actually, the area was filled with floating platforms that had a variety of different species on each one.
“The final battle is always quite the spectacle,” Val explained. “Not sure why. It’s never much of a fight.” She grinned at me. “Maybe your team will do better.” She crossed her fingers and showed them to me. “Fingers crossed!” She crossed her eyes. “Eyes crossed too!”
I found my entire team standing in a green field. Jason came up to me and took my hand. “You ready?”
“I hope so!” I replied.
I turned to Val. “Where’s the Guardian?”
Val pointed to a nearby hill dotted with a few trees and a track leading to the crest. “On the other side of that hill!”
“Well, team, let’s get walking!” I said. Pointing to the hill, I added, “Our destiny lies ahead.”
“Oh good! I love climbing hills!” Zeke said, running forward. Of course, being a zombie, he couldn’t run fast at all.
Walking briskly, we were able to catch up to him.
“How big do you think the Guardian is?” Luna asked.
“No idea,” I replied.
“Should I freeze time so we can get a look at this Guardian?” Tanya asked.
“Want Adam and I to take to the air?” Jason suggested.
Nodding my head, I looked at Jason and Adam. “Sure, but be careful!”
“What about my time stop?” Tanya asked. “Or do you want to try to do it yourself?”
“Go for it, Tanya,” I told her.
Tanya concentrated in front of her. She lifted her arms. “I created a time stop bubble with a ten-mile radius in front of us. That should hold the Guardian.”
I hoped Tanya’s confidence was warranted. Somehow though, I had the feeling that whatever we did, wouldn’t matter. We were dealing with a being of enormous power. Our efforts would have little effect.
Calling out to the boys, I yelled, “What do you see?”
Adam and Jason landed. “There’s fog at the bottom of the hill, and we can’t see anything,” Jason replied.
Reaching the top of the hill, we saw the cloud of fog. It suddenly lifted, revealing a pretty older woman sitting in a lounge chair and dangling her feet in a pond. She wore a black sleeveless shirt and red shorts.
“Do you think that pretty lady is the Guardian?” Zeke asked.
“She doesn’t seem like much!” Tanya remarked.
I heard a ‘poof ‘ sound and Tanya turned into a little wind-up toy.
“I’d say that’s a yes,” I replied.
We moved toward the woman.
“Should we attack?” Adam asked.
“I don’t think we should!” Zeke said.
Striding down the hill, I said. “Yeah, Zeke is right.”
Zeke grinned. “I never get tired of hearing that!”
We approached the very pretty lady slowly. She had long golden hair that matched her complexion. She sat there, her eyes closed, not seeming to care that we had arrived.
She opened one eye. “Oh, hello,” she said. “Congrats on making it this far!”
“Thanks!” I replied.
“Fight over!” she said.
Luna, Zeke, Adam, and Jason all fell helplessly to the ground.
The woman opened both her eyes. “Now, this is different!” she said to me.
I fought down the urge to make a fist. I figured this fight would have to be won mentally. Somehow, I just knew I wouldn't be able to overpower this woman.
“You’re still standing! Very impressive, Lia!” she said.
“You have an advantage over me!” I told her.
“Young lady, I have an advantage over everything and everyone!” she said.
“I mean, you know my name, and I don't know yours!”
“Right, they call me, Madam N!”
“What does the N stand for?”
“I believe it’s Never-ending!” Still sitting in her chair, she focused her glare on me. “You’ve already lasted longer than every other champion they’ve sent to challenge me, combined. Why don’t you leave well enough alone and leave? Come back in a couple of thousand years, when you might be ready.”
Her words echoed in my head. Part of me wanted to take that deal. But instead, I said, “Sorry, I feel that I need to challenge you!”
N smiled. “I get it. I do. You can’t be the best until you lose to the best a few times.”
I wondered if that statement was true. In a way, it did make some sense. I pounded my fist into my hand, hard. The clapping sound rattled the ground, but not N. She yawned. The crowd watching from above did start to stir.
“Well, at least you impressed the onlookers,” N told me. “I wonder if this will impress them.”
Glancing up I, saw the crowd had all vanished. “You made them go away! Impressive!” I said.
“I didn’t make them go away. I turned them all into little toys like your friend. Because well, I’m toying with you!” N smiled.
Using my super-vision, I saw that sure enough, all the platforms were covered with tiny toy versions of the beings that had just been watching.
“This is more private,” N said. “I don’t need an audience to beat you!”
“How do you know you’re going to win?” I demanded.
“Because I am you!” she said.
“Say what now?” I said, not worried at all about sounding like Zeke. “I’ve already met a future version of me, and you’re not her!”
N rolled her eyes. “I’m an alternative version of what you might eventually evolve into. It’s all very complicated and such. Your brain still isn’t developed enough to comprehend what I’m saying.” She stood up. “But Lia, I am what you can turn out to be if everything unfolds a certain way.”
“Okay…” I replied slowly.
“Or, I could just turn you into that stuff between my toes and leave you like that!” N said. “This is kind of on you.” Opening up her arms, she asked, “How do you want to play it?”
I thought about rushing her and hitting her with a full power punch to her perfect little nose. Somehow though, I got the feeling that wouldn’t do much, if any damage. Maybe if I blasted her with my heat vision…my cold breath…a super burp? Now that would impress her!
“You know I can be like a one-girl army!” I said, walking closer to her.
N smirked. “I don’t think you can be an army of one person. That doesn’t make sense. An army implies a group of people working together.” She pointed to my downed friends. “Kind of like them!”
I figured, ah what the heck… let’s end this one way or another, now! I rushed towards N at super speed. At least I wanted to. I wanted to bolt at her and hit her before she had a chance to react or think, for that matter. Instead, I found myself moving at a super slow pace. I felt like I was moving through jello… thick jello.
I kept pushing myself forward. It didn’t matter if I could move at full speed or not. I had a strong sense of de
termination on my side. This N couldn’t stop me that easily. Slowly, I curled my fingers into a fist. I flung my fist out towards N’s nose. N stood there. My fist met her nose. Things went back to normal speed. I pulled my hand back in pain.
“Ouch!” I said.
N looked at me. “Pretty darn good. I felt that!” she said. She smiled. “Also, the way you powered your way through that little reality slowdown to hit me, was very impressive.” She nodded. “I really am impressed!” She bit her lip. “I can’t remember the last time I was ever impressed.” Taking my hand, she said. “Thank you!”
“Ah, you’re welcome,” I replied. “I guess.”
“Lia, that was very brave of you to even attempt to attack me. You must sense that I am much more powerful than you. You have about as much chance to defeat me as an ant would have of defeating you. And I mean a really tiny baby ant that was just born. One of those totally harmless little ants.”
Raising my hand, I said. “I get it. I’m like an ant to you.”
N shook her head. “No, power-wise, not even close. Plus, you are way cuter than an ant.” N thought for a moment. “You can just say you give up and save yourself from an actual physical defeat,” she offered. “Trust me; this is the first time in history I’ve made that offer.”
I figured that had to be some sort of test. N wanted to see how I would react. I, for one of the very few times in my superhero life, was way out of my league here. I sensed I didn’t have any chance of winning. I had hit N with my best shot, and she had taken it like it was nothing.
“I don’t suppose you’d surrender to me?” I asked.
N shook her head. “Trust me, Lia. You don’t want that. You don’t want this job. Not now. Maybe someday, centuries from now. But not now.” She put her hand on my shoulder. “You did so well. You fought hard. You got farther than anyone I have ever faced. You should be proud.”
“Ah, thanks. I guess.”
“Now, go back home and live your life. Protect your world. Grow into the person I know you can become. Will that person become me? Even I don't know that. The universe and time are ripe with infinite possibilities. Not even I can see them all!”
“Okay…” I told her.
N puffed her lips and gently exhaled on me. I went nighty night.
Dear Diary: zzzzzzz
The Finale
I woke up on Earth. I was in a bed at BMS labs. Dad, Mom, Hana, Jason, Marie, and Lori were all around me.
“Wait, was I dreaming?” I asked.
Jason nodded. “Yeah.”
“Phew…that explains a lot.”
Zeke and Luna walked into the room, hand in hand. “Oh, she’s awake!” Luna exclaimed. “How nice!”
“Yep,” Jason said. “Before she woke up, she was mumbling about marshmallows and bunny rabbits.”
“Did I mumble anything about fighting a powerful lady named N?” I asked.
“Nope,” Jason said. “N is the one who put you to sleep though.”
“And sent us all back to Earth,” Luna said. “Very extraordinary.”
“Wait, so THAT was real?” I asked.
“Totally,” Jason said.
“Yes,” Luna said.
“Apparently so,” Dad said.
“I’ve done a scan of you and your friends, and it does appear that you have all been off-planet for some time,” Hana said.
“That means N kicked our butts!” I replied.
They all nodded.
“Did she tell you anything after she made us all fall helplessly at her feet?” Jason asked.
Shooting up in bed, I said. “That all really happened then!”
Zeke turned to Luna. “That’s why I like Lia. She has a keen grasp of the obvious.”
Everybody nodded.
Dad sat next to me. “We have no idea why this N sent you all back here to BMS labs, instead of to your homes. I guess she wanted us to check you all out.”
“And how are we?” I asked.
“You’re all in great shape. No ill effects,” Mom reported.
“I concur,” Hana said.
“I’m guessing that N sent us back here because this is the one place we all have in common!” Zeke suggested.
Adam and Tanya walked in. “Well, look who’s finally awake!” Tanya said.
“Yeah, I guess N hit me a little harder than she did you guys,” I replied.
I noticed Adam and Tanya were holding hands. “Wait, you two are together now?” I asked.
Tanya smirked. “Yeah, I decided to give the guy a chance. He’s cute and sweet. A girl could do worse.”
Adam grinned. “I’ll take that as a compliment!”
I stood up. I looked at Jason. He smiled at me and took hold of my hand.
I gulped. “So, you and I…”
Jason nodded. “Yup!”
“We’re dating?” I prompted.
“Yup!” Jason repeated.
“About time!” Lori said.
“So about time,” Marie agreed.
Jason wrapped his arms around me in a tight hug. A wide smile stretched across my face as I hugged him back. Even though both my parents and Hana were watching, I didn’t care. I was with Jason. He and I were finally more than friends. I was his girlfriend, and it just felt right.
