“Fuck, they don’t make ‘em prettier than you, Fancy,” he told her, his eyes everywhere on her body. He was devouring her from her red toenail polish to the part of her hair. His eyes traveled back down her body and seemed to stutter on the place where his hand still joined her.

Sequence rolled and reached down to the floor to dig through his pants, coming up with a condom. He held it up to her, a question in his eyes. “Thoughts?”

“Yes.” This was moving incredibly fast but Naomi didn’t want breaks. She just wanted to strap on the downhill skis and fly. “Yes.”

Rearing back onto his knees, Sequence slid down his underwear to thigh level, revealing the most handsome man-parts that Naomi had ever seen. Seriously, he was gorgeous. An Adonis. He was blunt and aggressive looking in a way that had Naomi shivering with want for him. She could be soft enough for the both of them. He could be as rough and gruff as he needed to be.

She watched, rapt, as he rolled the condom down his length and then braced his weight over her body. He tucked her panties to one side again, the way he had when he’d put his fingers inside her. Naomi had never had sex like that before. She started to suggest that he pull her underwear all the way off, but then he pushed himself forward, his blunt tip breaching her, and all thoughts left her head.

“Oh,” she moaned, she fought to keep her eyes open. She didn’t want to miss a second of this.

“Okay?” he asked as one of his hands slid around to her lower back and his mouth found her neck. He hadn’t pushed in any further, as if he wanted to give her time to get used to his invasion.

  “Yes, good. So good. More.”

  ***

He pushed into her a few inches and hissed like he was in pain. “Baby,” he groaned, pulling his head back and baring his teeth as he endured the most exquisite pleasure of his life. Naomi was everything he’d imagined since the moment she’d bumped into him in the elevator. He was drunk on her scent. On her taste. He was dimly aware that this had moved very fast, but here she was in his ear, begging for more, and he didn’t have it in him to deny either of them.

He gave them both the gift of plunging deep inside of her, burying himself to the hilt. He held there for a long moment while the world spun around him. Naomi clamped her legs around his back and words, unbidden, rose up in his throat. He wanted to tell her not to let go. He wanted to tell her to hold him tighter.

But he never said shit like that. And he wasn’t about to start now. Instead, he gritted his teeth, pulled out halfway and pushed back in. There was enough slick resistance that her nails bit into his back and he relished the pain of it. Without that, he’d spiral off into oblivion.

Sequence pressed his forehead to her collarbone, curled around her, and began to pump into her. His hands were everywhere, her hips, her ass, her breasts, her hair. He couldn’t touch her enough.

Thinking he was giving her too much of his weight, Sequence braced her around her back and lifted them so that he was back on his haunches and her legs were around his waist. Here, she looked down at him as he thrust sharply into her. She gasped and so did he and their mouths were twisting against one another, trying to find new ways to be close again.

She started grinding her pelvis against him and he felt her ripple around him. “Can you come like this?” he managed to grit out through clenched teeth.

“I think— I think— Oh!” Naomi answered his question by throwing her head back and squeezing him as hard as he’d wanted her to before. She was gasping and glistening with sweat and shaking when he laid her back down on the couch.

The couch started to scoot across the floor as he started up a rhythm that had him seeing stars. Literally. His eyelids clenched so hard that bursts of light exploded in his field of dark vision.

He felt Naomi’s mouth at his throat, his jaw, if she made it to his ear, he was a goner. That was his spot. And sure enough, her hot tongue slicked across his ear, her teeth clamping his lobe. He buried his face in her neck as he panted out his orgasm into her.

It was the clown car of orgasms. It just kept coming and coming. Like the pleasure was being pulled from him on a miles-long string. He’d never shook this hard with a woman. Usually, once he came, he was immediately rolling away from his partner, needing at least a few seconds separation from her. But not with Naomi and not right now. No. Instead of rolling away, Sequence pushed harder into her, working himself even farther into her, relishing the bright bursts of sensation that made him twitch with post-orgasm sensitivity. And then, thanks to the little ministrations of his hips, she tightened her legs around his waist again and tipped her hips up and down, back and forth.

Could he get her there another time? This was a world record for Naomi. When she came with a dude, it was almost always by her own hand, and she’d never had a problem with that. But this? This was something else. She was climbing Sequence like a tree as he twitched inside of her, his breath hot at her neck, one of his hands gripping hard at her ass, the other in her hair. Almost all of his weight was on top of her and that’s really what did it for her in the end. The idea that she was trapped underneath the sexiest man she’d ever met and he wouldn’t let her up until she came one more time for him.

So she did. Naomi held her breath and opened her eyes through one more orgasm. The prisms caught the sunlight and threw rainbows across her vision as she simultaneously tightened and exploded. Her consciousness spiraled out and her body slipped against his, searching for purchase on all those slick muscles. He held her close and rode her through the orgasm until the end.

  CHAPTER EIGHT

She was still clasping around him when he reached down and pulled out, making quick work of the condom.

He was standing then and striding to the bathroom. When he came back out a moment later, Naomi was still spread out on the couch, her underwear tugged all over the place, a blissed out expression on her face.

Sequence surveyed her from the doorway of the living room. “I meant what I said. They don’t make ‘em prettier than you.”

She glowed at the compliment and glowed at the orgasms and glowed at just having had the best sex of her life. Her body still thrummed with it. Glancing at her clock on the wall, she was stunned to see that barely twenty minutes had passed since they’d started kissing. To Naomi, it seemed like hours, days had gone by.

Sequence had already pulled his underwear back into place and he came and sat on the edge of the couch. He adjusted her bra and underwear so that she was all covered up again but he didn’t lay back down the way she was hoping he might. So instead she sat up next to him, wanting to be on the same level.

“You hungry?” she asked. “I figure I probably owe you a meal or two after all the times you’ve fed me this past week.”

He paused and though Naomi was generally fine with Sequence’s silences, this one made her kind of nervous.

When he still didn’t say anything, Naomi attempted to fill in the blanks. “Or… maybe you have to go?”

He nodded, cleared his throat. “Yeah. I’m on call tonight actually. For another client.”

“Oh. I didn’t realize you had to work tonight.” There was no reason for her to have known that or not, but he wasn’t making this easy, she was uncomfortable, and somebody had to say something here. She took a deep breath. “Is it silly that I kind of didn’t realize you guys had other clients?”

He quirked her a quick smile and turned to look her in the eye. “Not really. We try to make all of our clients feel like they’re the only people on earth while we’re working with them.”

Naomi bit her lip. She couldn’t help but wonder if he was telling her something right now.

But he was hard to read and she really didn’t want to miss out on an opportunity just because she didn’t put herself out there. “So, you have to go, like, right now?”

Sequence paused, for a long time, one hand tracing over the back of his head. He stood up, still clad only in his underwear, and walked over to the window. He looked down at the street, in th
e direction of his SUV, then he turned and watched the rainbows dance all around Naomi’s colorful oasis.

“I don’t want to go right now,” he told her.

The words sounded strange, almost like they hurt to say. Hope leaped in Naomi’s chest. “Seek, come here.” She held out a hand and for a moment Sequence just looked at it. After a minute he strode over to her, taking her hand and sitting next to her on the couch.

Naomi shoved at his shoulders until he melted backwards a bit and then she snuggled into his side.

“My brother calls me Seek,” he said in a low voice.

She traced the tattoos on the back of his hand. “You could always come back, you know. When you’re off duty?”

Sequence took a deep breath and was quiet for a long time. When he finally spoke, Naomi’s stomach was dropping. “I don’t really do that, Naomi. Come back.”

“Okay… But this time you’re going to?” She held up her hands really quickly, like it was a stick up. “I’m not trying to pressure you, I’m just trying to read between the lines here. You’re telling me one thing with your words and a whole other thing with your tone.”

Her eyes were so wide and her hair was everywhere, sitting there in her underwear. Sequence had to lean forward and press a soft kiss to her neck. She melted against him.

“I said I was on call, not on duty.” He paused and scraped a hand over the back of his head again. “I guess I don’t have to leave. I could be on call here.”

Naomi sprang up like she was electrocuted, happiness jolting every line on her face. “Great!” She immediately wilted a little, obviously attempting to play it a bit cooler. “That sounds good. Should I make some food? Or we could order?”

Sequence let her gather the takeout menus and chatter and refill his seltzer and all the while, he wondered what the hell he was doing.

  He never stayed.

He needed to be on the highway back home pronto. As he watched Naomi flit around her apartment, red underwear and red hair, the rainbows from the prisms making designs across her fair skin, Sequence started to feel something strange crawl through him. He felt as if he were an explorer who’d had the extreme good fortune to capture a mermaid. But he knew that if he were to try to bring that mermaid home with him, she’d die outside of her natural habitat.

God. The truth hit him at once. He wanted to keep Naomi. He wanted to spend the night and text her when he got home the next day. He wanted to become very familiar with her apartment. He got a flash of what it would be like on a day where she had to leave early for work and he woke up in this apartment alone. He imagined drinking a cup of coffee on a royal blue couch, literal rainbows dancing everywhere.

  Shit. He wanted that.

But he also knew that he was not the same kind of creature as Naomi. He was a quiet, grumpy asshole. He was a loner who barely understood how to keep up a relationship with his twin brother, let alone a woman. And that implied that he just had some sort of attitude problem. But this wasn’t something that could be adjusted. He was a truly screwed up person. From the top down. Naomi didn’t know anything about his childhood, or his past, or the decisions he’d made to get where he was today.

He pictured all that stuff as big handfuls of mud that he’d have to splat on the walls of her beautiful home. How could he even consider that? Could he really be that selfish?

Sequence wasn’t someone who dated women. Ever. As in, he’d never even been on a date. Atlas went on dates with women. In fact, he’d even been known to hang out with the same woman for a few weeks in a row. But he always dumped them in the end.

And that was the best case scenario. Naomi wasn’t the kind of girl you fucked around with for a few weeks and then kicked to the curb. She also wasn’t the kind of girl you slept with once and never called again, but he figured that that ship had fully sailed.

What was he supposed to do here? Sequence felt trapped. In a cage of his own making. And the longer he stayed in the cage, the harder it would get to break through the bars. He needed to break out while he was still strong enough to do it. He needed to do it now.

Sequence shifted to face Naomi when she came back and plopped down on the couch next to him. He almost lost his resolve. She just looked so ungodly pretty, sparkling like a jewel in the sunlight, that huge grin on her face. She smelled like mint, but of course, a fancy version of mint. He figured it was some expensive shampoo or something. He’d barely noticed it before in his lust to get to her.

Sequence’s eyes fell to her neck. There was a noticeable hickey forming there. His eyes fell to her bra. Red threads splayed out over her white skin where he’d obviously torn the dainty garment.

“You don’t want me to stay, Naomi.”

  “What?”

He realized that he’d just interrupted whatever she’d been chatting about. The smile fell from her face and he felt like punching himself in the nuts. God, he’d really fucked this up. He knocked a fist against his knee and tried to think of the right way to say what he needed to say.

“Have you ever done this before?”

The line between her brows appeared and Sequence didn’t let himself smooth it away. He’d been wanting to for a week, but even now he couldn’t let himself do it.

“Done what? Sex?” She gave him a small smile and shifted so that her knees were in front of her. A defensive position. And Sequence was the one who was making her do that.

  “A one night stand.”

There. He’d said it. And just like that, he felt all the happiness leech out of the room. It was like he’d flipped a switch and she went from full color to black and white. He handed her a pillow from behind him and she automatically clutched it to her middle, the way he’d known she would. She wanted to cover herself from him.

Naomi gulped. “Um. Yes? I have had a one night stand before. But it was a long time ago and it was… a lot less confusing.”

The nut punching feeling overwhelmed him. “This is probably a conversation we should have had before we had sex.” He dropped his head forward and scraped a palm over the back of his neck a few times.

“Just to be clear, I do want you to stay. You just said that I didn’t want that. And if you don’t want to stay, that’s totally fine. I’m a big girl, Sequence. You’re totally within your rights to leave whenever you want. But for the record, I want you to stay.”

She was killing him. He tilted his head to the side and she caught him in the snare of those sapphire eyes, her pearly teeth pressing into her lip.

“No, you don’t. You might think you do, but you don’t.”

The line between her brows appeared. “Yes, I do.”

“Naomi, I tore your bra. I gave you a fucking hickey that you’re going to have to deal with on your first day of work at your brand new job you’re so excited about. I fucked you with our underwear still on.”

She flinched at each point he brought up, her palm coasting over her neck like she was searching for the hickey, her eyes falling to her bra. “Sequence, I don’t care about—”

“I care, Naomi. I care about it. You deserve a hell of a lot better than some asshole pawing at you for fifteen minutes and then leaving.”

“So, don’t leave. Have some takeout, and then paw at me again. I’ll let you take my underwear off this time.”

She was smiling at him with those crooked pearly whites and just slaying him.

“You don’t want this in your life, Fancy. Trust me. I’m sorry I fucked this up so bad. I really am.”

He stood up and started putting his clothes back on. She just watched him with those big blue eyes, biting that bottom lip.

When he toed into one shoe and the other, she tossed the pillow aside, stood up and put her hands on her hips.

“So, let me get this straight. You want to stay. And I want you to stay. But you’re not gonna stay?”

  “I gotta go.”

  She frowned at him.

He paused. “Look, it was either this or I waited until you’d fallen
asleep.”

She laughed, shocked. The look immediately gave way to sadness. “Wow. Sequence.”

He looked around, making sure he had absolutely everything. There was no way he was going to have to come back here. He didn’t think he’d be able to make himself leave twice.

He let his eyes memorize her apartment, every detail. And especially Naomi. He burned her into his retina. He knew she was going to flash in front of his eyes whenever he closed them for a long, long time. Red and shining and delicious. Frowning at him. She didn’t look hurt, she looked…sad for him.

He turned from her and strode for the door. With one hand on the door handle, he froze when she was suddenly in front of him. Her thin arms came around his waist and she hugged him, so hard he gasped a little. It was exactly the way he’d wanted her to hold him during sex, but hadn’t known how to ask for it. She hugged the life out of him. He didn’t let his arms come around her.

“I’m sorry this is so hard for you,” she told him. “I want you to know that in the future, when this happens again for you, I just don’t think it has to be this hard.”

She went onto her tiptoes, pressed those lips against his for three perfect seconds, and then she stepped away, holding the door open for him.

Sequence stepped through and didn’t say anything else. Not even goodbye. He didn’t turn around as he waited for the elevator. Didn’t look back.

In the lobby, he intercepted a delivery boy. “Hey! Kid. You bringing that food up to 8C?”

  The kid nodded.

“Here.” Sequence took out his wallet.

“Already paid for, man.” The kid studied the receipt. “Tip and all.”

Damn it. Sequence stalked out of the lobby, feeling lower than he ever had before. He’d even made her pay for his dinner.

Sequence drove back to Brooklyn with the radio on high volume. He searched for the commercials. He wanted inane noise, not music. He wanted to block out all the thoughts in his head.

Mostly, he wanted to block out Naomi’s last words to him. I’m sorry this is so hard for you .
