Just as I was coming down from my climax, I scraped the metal claws on his back. Chaos threw his head back, shouting in ecstasy. Lighting fast, his head came back down, and he buried his fangs in my neck, filling me with both his bonding essence and his seed. I fell apart again, writhing beneath him while he relentlessly plowed into me.

By the time we both collapsed into each other’s arms, I was utterly and wonderfully wrecked.

“Rest well, my mate, for I will give you none in the next year,” Chaos whispered.

I had no idea what the underlying meaning I could sense was, but he could go at me like this however much he wanted.

“I’ll hold you to it,” I whispered back, snuggling into him and losing myself in the loving embrace of his consciousness wrapping around mine.

In the days and weeks that followed, his meaning quickly became obvious: we had a year to start our family before we embarked on the final war—we hoped—against General Khutu.

I didn’t get my Vanguard insignia at the same time as the other Aspirants from Thirilia. I had missed too much of the standard training program, and my OCD mate didn’t want people saying I hadn’t earned it the right way. As I’d already secured the role as his Soulcatcher, I didn’t care. In truth, I was grateful for getting a chance to go through the normal program with the new girls as there was indeed a lot to learn that would prove highly beneficial to me moving forward. Plus, it only delayed my ‘graduation’ ceremony by seven weeks.

However, we got to celebrate two events that day: my insignia and the confirmation of my pregnancy. Chaos was ridiculous with all the pampering, not that I really minded. But when the soul of our baby sparked three months into the pregnancy, it reached a whole new level of silliness.

Truth be told, I became a little jealous of the amount of time he spent touching minds with our son instead of me. It actually shamed me that I should begrudge any love Chaos would bestow our unborn child. My mood swings were of epic proportions, and I would close myself off to everyone, especially to my son to spare him negative emotions. But it was my baby’s loving and joyous emotions flooding through my system, demanding I reopen myself, that turned into a wonderful experience what could have easily been a nightmare.

My hormone levels were completely out of whack and nothing Victoria did could fix it. And then the real mind fuck began when my skin further darkened during the two months that craziness lasted, and I lost my Soulcatching ability to display those of a Portal instead. It erased any doubt we had that melanin levels were somehow affecting our nervous and endocrine systems to define our psychic powers, and that something in my Thirilian ancestry was throwing a wrench in things.

Although things got back to normal before we could figure it out, and while it didn’t feature as a top priority for the Vanguard, our scientists would continue to investigate to better understand the nature of our powers.

Sadly, not all research proved as pleasant and uplifting. After months of testing, all the scientific minds agreed that there would be no saving the Mimic mutants. What had been done to them couldn’t be reverted. The Mimic Council decided to awaken the mutants and expose them to the reality of their situation so that they could make a choice. They all decided to exit this world in accordance with the ancestral tradition of their amphibian species. After eating a mofit leaf, a slow-acting, lethal but painless poison, they would swim far into the ocean, saying farewell to all the dwellers of their underwater realm.

Still, the wind had shifted. No more raids or invasions were reported. Even now, as I stood in the docking bay next to Chaos, our son Ghost cradled in my arms, we watched the many Warriors disembarking from their ships. After months—in some cases years—of endlessly scouting the galaxy to thwart the General’s nefarious plans, they were finally coming home.

“A few more months,” I whispered, leaning against Chaos. “A few more months and this could all be over.”

“No, my love. This chapter will hopefully be over. But there are plenty of other idiots out there begging for us to spank them,” Chaos corrected teasingly. “You’re not getting off the hook that easily.”

I snorted. “Suits me just fine. I didn’t go through all this training only to retire so soon.”

“Don’t worry, Sabra. Once the war with the Kryptids is over, I have plans for you,” Chaos said, wrapping a possessive arm around me.

“Oh? And what would that be?” I asked while Ghost lifted a pudgy little scaly hand to try and grab his father’s bottom lip.

“For you to help me one-up Raven and Liena by us becoming the first Vanguard couple to birth triplets,” Chaos said with a completely serious face.

My jaw dropped, and my eyes bugged. I was about to ask him if he’d lost his mind when I felt him inwardly snicker.

“Sure,” I said, playing along. “But let’s go for quadruplets. Then you’ll get to see how hormonal crazy I can get.”

“Perfect,” Chaos purred. “I love you, Sabra, in all your shades of crazy.

I melted against him and lifted my face to receive his kiss. “I love you, too, my fearless Warrior.”

  THE END.
