But she still held on to the bead of hope. I’ll see you again at the star’s end. She hadn’t seen Alex – but he might have seen her . . .

That thought buoying her, she headed for the main atrium. The crowds thickened again, people hurrying for local trains. She glanced back. Nobody followed her from the Eurostar terminal. Was anyone watching for her ahead? She picked a course through the throng almost at random. Part of it was out of concern that she was being tailed. The other part was simply that she didn’t know where she was going. She descended an escalator to a lower level, crossed it, then came back up. Her concern grew. She really had come to Paris for nothing. She’d been wrong, stupid. He wasn’t here—

  ‘Bonjour. Suivez-moi.’

A man in a dark hoodie walked past her. Connie stared after him, momentarily frozen. Was it Alex? She wasn’t sure. He was the right height, but she hadn’t seen his face.

The man didn’t look back. She drew in a breath – then followed him, as asked. She glanced around as she walked. Was anyone paralleling her movements? Were Operatives all over the station, hoping she would lead them to Alex?

She didn’t know. But she was sure that Alex would. If she was being followed, he wouldn’t have come to her.

The man went through an archway, disappearing from sight. She went after him—

  He was gone.

Connie stopped in alarm. She saw only harried travellers. Where was he? He’d only been metres ahead of her—

  ‘Bonjour.’

The same voice, now behind. She whirled – to face a smiling, bearded Alex Reeve.

Reeve was relieved when Connie returned his smile. ‘Alex!’ she cried, hugging him. He embraced her too. ‘Are you okay?’

‘I’m fine,’ he said. ‘You got my message, then.’

‘Yeah.’ She released him, and looked up into his face. ‘But how did you know I’d be here?’

‘Trade secrets,’ he said, with a grin. ‘Sorry.’ In truth, Jaz had told him she was about to leave the day before. He had stayed in occasional contact with the young mother by email. Both she and Brownlow had also received gift packages.

‘I see.’ Concern crossed Connie’s face. ‘But . . . you weren’t worried about me being followed?’

‘You weren’t,’ he assured her. All the same, he gave his surroundings another check. Nobody triggered his internal radar. ‘Shall we go?’

  ‘Where to?’

He smiled again. ‘Let’s find out.’

Reeve and Connie headed for the station’s exit. Paris lay beyond, and all of Europe. They walked out into the light, together.
