  “And you know who Lord Hadron is?”

  I opened my mouth to ask when the P.A. system squealed to life. I covered my ears with my hands until a disembodied male voice blared across the canteen. “Casdy, please come to the H.R. department now.”

  Lucian shot me a surprised look and mouthed ‘good luck’. Fear pinched my heart. What was the reason they called upon me this time?

  Last time I was called upon to the H.R., it ended quite well. Somehow Lucian wishing me luck made me feel more scared than usual. I forgot what I wanted to ask her as questions multiplied in my head.

  I thanked her and scurried out of the canteen. I made a mental note to ask her that question the next time I saw her again. I had a strong feeling I would. Three weeks had earned me enough freedom to roam around the space brothel without any facilitator’s escort.

  I knocked at Arlox’s door and pushed through. Arlox didn’t look pleased when he looked up at me. That alone sent a shiver down my spine and made me question every single thing I did throughout my whole life.

  Arlox was alone and it felt more intimidating than being surrounded by a pack of Vugarians.

  Was it because I asked Lucian about Janifa and the eroticum? Did they secretly tap us? My money’s on it.

  “It’s your lucky day,” said Arlox. “Lord Hadron has bailed you out.”

  My head was spinning. Was that what Lord Hadron mean when he said he wanted to claim me? He bought me…

  “Pack your stuff. Your transport will arrive in ten minutes.” I stood there with my feet rooted to the ground. My whole body was paralyzed with fear. My head was whirling with everything Lucian told and warned me about.

  What if Lord Hadron wanted to use me as his experimental subjects? I had already lost my future, my best friend and my whole fucking life. The only thing that kept me going was the demanding, insatiable alien cocks that made me feel alive.

  I mentally made a list of things I had to pack, but my brain drew a blank. I had nothing to pack. I had nothing for myself. The only thing I had here was my friendship with Rebexa.

  I pulled up and turned around towards the direction of the canteen. “Please still be there!” I muttered to myself as I sped up down the hallway. Once I bolted through the automated door, my stomach flipped.

  Rebexa and Lucian were gone. The air was knocked out of my lungs and I held onto the door frame for support as I caught my breath. Fuck…I didn’t even get to say my last goodbye to Rebexa or to ask for more advice before I left with Lord Hadron.

  “Are you looking for someone, Miss Casdy?” A familiar female voice came from behind me made me jump. My heart almost exploded when I turned on my heels and my gaze fell on Janifa’s face. Everything that Lucian told me flashed in my mind.

  The eroticum. Lord Hadron…I looked at the visible wrinkles and the eye bags that were getting more obvious on her face. I never noticed all these before. Janifa was still as beautiful and I could imagine she would be even prettier before.

  There was no expression on Janifa’s face when she said, “Is there anything I could help you with, Miss Casdy?” I thought Lord Hadron must have sucked the emotions out of her as well.

  I shook my head to clear my mind. “Yes!” I cried out. “What the fuck happened to you? What did Lord Hadron do to you?”

  Janifa’s pupils dilated for a brief second. I thought that second was the most animated she had ever been. “How did you know?” she muttered and looked away.

  I glanced down the empty hallway, half expecting the Vugarians to come and drag me into Lord Hadron’s spacejet. Urgency sizzled through my veins. I grabbed onto Janifa’s shoulders and shook her hard.

  “It doesn’t matter! Please tell me! Lord Hadron bought me!” My eyes were swimming with tears. I was half-pleading. Janifa’s widened eyes pierced into mine. “What?”

  I sniffed and nodded. “Yes, I am about to face the same
fate as you did. So it is not really that personal. Please tell me what happened?” I gulped hurriedly. “Why are you still working for them? You are literally free to walk away, right?”

  Janifa’s eyes turned glassy when she nodded. “You are right. I am free to walk away but to where?”

  I looked at Janifa. Guilt pricked at my conscience. For the first time, I felt pity for her. Even after everything she had done to us. To where?

  “Earth? Home?” I muttered stupidly and felt even stupider after.

  Janifa sniggered and shook her head in self-pity. “There is no home, Miss Casdy. The planet we used to call home is no longer…what it used to be…Humankind has been given a chance. The perfect home to live. With unlimited natural resources that enabled the residents to thrive, yet greed had blinded our predecessors…”

  I hung my head as her words struck me. The robot’s fart. The over industrialization. The wars against our own kind. Now they had become the downfall of our own species.

  “Miss Casdy.” Janifa cupped my face in her hands. I almost cringed at how rough and wrinkled her hands were. I shook the thoughts off and held them tightly. “There is no turning back. Even if you go back, there will be no jobs. No hopes. No future for you. The United Anova is trying to save the last of mankind. The only thing that they could do is to send the rest of us to outer space, hoping we could reproduce and continue our bloodlines…”

  I wanted to cry but there were no tears. I guess I already knew this would become of us. I already knew the Earth we used to know would die one day and this was it.

  “You don’t have to repeat the same mistake that I did.” I glanced up and saw a brief sadness flitted across her face.

  What was it that she did? Was it what Rakun had warned me not to do?

  “Lord Hadron was madly in love with me.” Her voice shook with emotions it was so hard to believe she was the Janifa we used to know. “I was in love with him too…”

  I pursed my lips as a pang of jealousy swept over me. Lord Hadron was in love with Janifa before. I wished I hadn’t heard this from Janifa.

  I studied her face, seeking for signs of deceit. This woman tricked me into this so-called space program and sold me to the Vugarians. How could I trust anything that came from that filthy mouth?

  As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t bring myself to hate her. I couldn’t find any signs of deceptions on her face. My mind was whirling around in delirium. I shook my head, trying to purge the swarm of uncanny feelings bouncing around me.

  Was I in love with Lord Hadron? What was stopping me from leaving? My thought went to Rebexa. As long as Janifa was here, the spacejet would be here.

  All I had to do was hijack it and fly home. Even though I had zero experience and knowledge in flying shit, I could do it.

  “No…please listen to me, Casdy,” said Janifa, almost pleading.

  “Why should I trust you, Janifa?” I shouted and regretted it immediately. I glanced around the canteen, expecting someone to come in to arrest me. My chest heaved and fell erratically as I glared into Janifa’s eyes.

  “Why should I trust you when you were the one who made me board this ship and sell me to the Vugarians? Why should I trust you when you refuse to tell me shit about the so-called space program?”

  “You do not seem to take in anything I said to you.”

  “If Lord Hadron really loved you, Janifa, why did he abandon you?”

  Janifa pursed her lips. “Right. You don’t have to trust me. I promise that you will regret if you choose to escape from Vugaria right now. You must accept your fate. There is no turning back. You can’t go back to the dying planet.”

  Anger surged in me. I chewed my lip. I knew I shouldn’t be saying this but it blurted out of rage. “I don’t want to end up like you, Janifa! I don’t want to be used and then discarded like trash!”

  I thought Janifa would have a more dramatic response but instead she nodded. “Which is why I am telling you not to do what you are planning to do. I was once in your shoes, Casdy. I wanted escape. I thought I could do this all by myself.”

  I continued to glare at her as I waited for her to finish her story. “When I found out that I was being betrayed and sold by my own planet to Vugaria, I was furious. All I had in mind was revenge. I pretended to blend in, to serve and pleasure the alien clients while I planned for my escape.”

  I shook my head to purge the sliver of sympathy that was growing for Janifa in me. She had been through the same shit. She should have had more empathy for me. For the rest of us.

  Her voice started to break when she continued, “Then, I caught the eye of Lord Hadron. He became obsessed with me. I thought this would be the chance for me to get away. I tricked him into buying me off Starry Starry Funhouse. I thought it would be easier for me to escape when I was in his home planet. I was never so wrong.”

  “What happened next? Lucian told me he used you like a floor mat.”

  Janifa sneered. “She was not completely wrong. Lord Hadron was a darling to me. He was deeply and madly in love with me. And my feelings were mutual.”

  I clenched my fists. I could taste the bitter jealousy in my mouth. I didn’t want to hear about this anymore yet I wanted to know the truth.

  “But that did not mean I was giving up my escape plan at all. On one fateful night, I decided to flee from Uglion. Of course, the planet was highly secured so I was caught within minutes. Lord Hadron was utterly disappointed with me. I begged for forgiveness…”

  Tears welled up in her eyes and streamed down her cheeks. “He did not forgive me. I did not expect him to. He then returned me to Starry Starry Funhouse where the Vugarians wanted to kill me.”

  My eyes widened with shock.

  “Lord Hadron did not let them take my life.”

  Suddenly, everything became so clear. “They decided to use you as their experimental subject instead…creating this eroticum.”

  Janifa nodded and wiped her tears with her hands. When she looked up, she sniffed and forced a smile on her face. “If you do not want to end up like me, Casdy, you should never do what I have done. Lord Hadron wouldn’t have done this to me if I did not betray him first.”

  I heaved a long, deep sigh and looked away to digest what I learned from Janifa. I turned around to look at her when I caught Arlox and Rakun walk in through the door from over Janifa’s shoulders.

  “What are you doing here, Casdy? Lord Hadron is waiting for you. He is getting impatient!” shouted Arlox. When he saw Janifa, his face relaxed into a lewd expression. “Oh, you’re here, Janifa.”

  Arlox smirked at me. “Janifa is probably the last person you should ask for advice here.”

  Janifa’s expression was neutral. “All I can say is, good luck, Casdy.”

  “Come on, Casdy, let’s get going!” Arlox grabbed onto my arm and tugged me out of the canteen when I stopped him at the door. “Wait!” I cried out and turned around to Janifa.

  “Thank you. For everything.”

  I did not get to say goodbye to Rebexa. Arlox said I had the chance. The last thing I wanted was to offend Lord Hadron, especially what happened the other time. Especially what happened to Janifa.

  Janifa’s words were still whirling in my head as we walked down the hallway towards the main foyer. Janifa said that Lord Hadron and she loved each other. It made me wonder if the love still existed. After all, it was Lord Hadron who had saved her life. I hated to admit how jealous I was right now.

  What if his old love for Janifa rekindled and he used discard me like what he had done to Janifa? I had never had such worries in my life before.

  Maybe this was true love? I never had a romantic relationship with any boys before. I wasn’t even sure anymore…but when Arlox and I walked into the main foyer where Lord Hadron was sprawled on the lounge waiting impatiently for me, all my concerns dissolved replaced with pure lust.

  I sucked in a deep breath as my eyes fell on his
gorgeous brooding ocean blue eyes. My stomach melted. My legs were turning into jelly I wished I could fall into his embrace right now.

  When his eyes fell on me, a wicked smile crept up his face. “My bride is finally here,” growled Lord Hadron.
