Tiny Acts of Love

Page 28

by Lucy Lawrie

I have to be brave. Brave enough to allow myself not to know how it all turns out. Brave enough to love them nonetheless.

I don’t know, can’t know, everything that will happen. But what I have learnt is that the end of the story is there, implicit, in every moment. It’s the catch in your voice as you say goodnight to your child, it’s the extra moment you hug your mother on the doorstep. It’s when you stop, on a walk through the park in autumn, caught short by the surge in your heart when you see the flaming leaves against a crisp blue sky.

And in every moment, with every heartbeat, I hold Jonathan and Sophie close inside me. When everything around me falls quiet, I feel the words that my heart beats out.

At least for now, at this moment where our lifetimes cross, for the duration of this infinitesimal blip in the face of eternity: ‘You’re mine, you’re mine, you’re mine.’
